In short
Enmu is Lower Moon One of Demon Slayer, the only demon Muzan spared during the purge of the lower ranks. His Blood Demon Art puts his victims to sleep, offers them a pleasant dream, then turns it into a nightmare. He fuses his body with the Mugen Train and its two hundred passengers, recruits humans to destroy the demon slayers’ spiritual cores, and falls to the blades of Tanjiro and Inosuke.
Contents
He thanks his master for letting him be his last victim. The four demons before him in the room begged, protested or tried to flee. Enmu, for his part, bows and says he enjoys making humans suffer. That answer is what saves his life.
In Demon Slayer, Enmu is the demon of the Mugen Train movie, and the only lower rank to carry an entire feature film. This article traces his human past, his power of dreams, his fusion with the train, and the fight that pits him against two demon slayers while Kyojuro Rengoku, one of the Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, protects the carriages. The camp he serves is presented on our page about the demons of Demon Slayer and the demon Moons.

In Demon Slayer, Enmu takes the form of a pale young man, black hair with red and blue tips, sharply slanted blue eyes, with the kanji of his rank engraved in his left eye and a horizontal slit in place of his right pupil.
Three square markings adorn each of his cheeks, from green to yellow. He wears a long buttoned black coat, a white shirt and grey striped trousers, which makes him one of the few demons in Demon Slayer dressed in Western style.
After the extra dose of blood Muzan grants him, his body changes. A mouth grows on the back of his left hand, an eye beside it, and the kanji for dream appears on almost all his fingers.
The character’s name already says what he does. The kanji of Enmu mean nightmare, and the author gives him a power that matches this reading exactly, without any symbolic detour.
His personality comes down to one sentence: he enjoys watching people suffer. His favourite method is to offer his victim a happy dream before turning it into a nightmare, for the expression it produces on their face.
This sadism does not stop at humans. During the purge of the lower ranks, Enmu watches his colleagues die one by one with visible pleasure, which the story shows without comment.
The only one spared
Five Lower Moons are summoned before Muzan, four die on the spot. Enmu survives because he thanks his master instead of defending himself.
You will find this white face with green markings on his figure, among the demon figures.

Before his transformation into a Demon Slayer demon, Enmu was a human unable to tell a dream from reality, and had been since childhood. The story specifies that this caused constant problems for those around him.
As an adult, without being a doctor, he misuses hypnosis therapy. He convinces terminally ill patients that they have recovered, lets them live a few days in this certainty, then watches them realise it was false.
The patients always end up seeing through the lie, and that does not stop him. He continues this practice throughout his human life, which foreshadows exactly what he will do with his demon power.
His transformation is an accident. Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon, simply wanted to devour him, and eats his entrails. Enmu feels no pain from this fatal wound and starts praising his attacker.
These last words change the course of things. His heart and brain stop, and Muzan transforms him on a whim, with no particular intention. Enmu knows it, and spends the rest of his existence trying to earn a place in his master’s memory.
The childhood
He cannot tell a dream from reality, and no one around him understands why.
The trade
Misused hypnosis sessions, promising a cure to the dying.
The transformation
Muzan devours him, then turns him into a demon on a whim, because he complimented him.
The power of dreams
Enmu’s Blood Demon Art in Demon Slayer puts people to sleep. All he has to do is speak the formula, or for a victim to hear his voice, and they fall into a sleep they cannot escape by willpower alone. On the train, he does not even need to speak: his blood is mixed into the ink of the tickets, and sleep falls when the conductor punches them.
The content of the dream is his to shape. He shows Tanjiro his family alive, Zenitsu a life alongside Nezuko, Inosuke a place as leader. Each scene is built so that the victim refuses to wake up.
The dream is not a vague illusion but a complete world, with smells, voices and continuity. Tanjiro finds his home there, his brothers and sisters, and the story lets the reader settle in for several pages before taking them back.
The second phase is the real attack. Once the sleeper has settled into the dream, Enmu can turn it into a nightmare, and he does so after announcing in advance what he is going to show, for the pleasure of the announcement.
The general mechanism of these gifts is detailed in our article on demons’ Blood Demon Arts. Enmu’s is the only one in the story that works on the mind rather than the body.
A dream announced in advance
Enmu warns Tanjiro that his next dream will show his father alive. The demon wants his victim to know what awaits them.
| Stage | What Enmu does |
|---|---|
| Falling asleep | his voice is enough, the victim collapses and can no longer wake up alone |
| The happy dream | he shows each person what they have lost or longed for, to keep them inside |
| The nightmare | he turns the scene around, often after announcing what he is going to show |
| The spiritual core | his human accomplices enter the sleeper’s unconscious to destroy it |
| The fusion | his body merges with the train, which becomes his weapon and his shell |
The spiritual cores
In Demon Slayer, his plan does not stop at sleep. Enmu recruits desperate humans, gives them access to pleasant dreams, and promises them more if they help him. Their task is to enter the sleepers’ unconscious.
At the centre of this unconscious lies a spiritual core. Destroying this core leaves the victim alive but empty, unable to wake up or think, and that is what Enmu asks of his accomplices.
The demon warns them of no danger. He regards them as replaceable, does not tell them what happens to those who enter the dream of a trained demon slayer, and loses several of them without paying any attention.
The plan fails because of the sleepers’ own willpower. Tanjiro wakes up by cutting his own throat in his dream, a move the demon had not foreseen, and he does it again every time Enmu puts him back to sleep.
This stubbornness intrigues the demon, who ends up complimenting the young demon slayer’s determination before understanding its motive. Our page about the hero of Demon Slayer and his family explains why no dream holds him for long.
Accomplices he lets die
Enmu does not warn his human allies of the danger. He considers them replaceable and sends them into the unconscious of trained demon slayers without a word of warning.
The fusion with the Mugen Train
The second part of the plan is the most spectacular in Demon Slayer. Enmu melts his body into the Mugen Train, takes control of the two hundred passengers, and turns the whole train into an extension of himself.
The choice of the train is not decorative. In the Japan of Demon Slayer, the railway is still a curiosity for boys from the mountains, and the train runs through the countryside at night, far from any help, with passengers who are already asleep.
The train therefore becomes his body. The walls attack, the floor grabs legs, the sides close in, and every sleeping passenger serves as both hostage and food supply.
There is a tactical reason for this choice. Enmu knows that his physical strength is no match for an Upper Moon’s, so he chooses ground where no one can reach him, and a number of victims that keeps his opponents busy.
He places his neck, his only vulnerable point, at the level of the engine, under armour of flesh and steel. Our article on the ways to kill a demon explains why this location matters so much.
Two hundred passengers held hostage
The Mugen Train carries about two hundred people. Enmu puts them all to sleep at once and makes the train his own body.
The fight against Tanjiro and Inosuke
The two Demon Slayer swordsmen quickly realise that they need to look for the neck somewhere other than on the demon’s human form. Inosuke, with his sense of touch, eventually locates the sensitive area in the engine.
Tanjiro climbs onto the moving train, resists sleep, is put back to sleep, wakes up again, and joins the manoeuvre. Together they cut off the top of the engine compartment, which amounts to a beheading.
The manoeuvre requires exact coordination. The two boys work side by side in the cab, while the train runs at full speed, the bewitched driver stabs Tanjiro and the demon’s flesh tries to put them back to sleep.
The demon dies cursing everyone, the demon slayers, Nezuko, and the Upper Moons he will never have joined. Above all, he regrets not having devoured any of the two hundred passengers, and dying so far from the rank he was aiming for.
The derailment injures dozens of passengers, but none dies. Rengoku held five carriages on his own, Zenitsu and Nezuko guarded the other three, and the two boys were able to concentrate on the neck.
Their respite lasts a few minutes. Akaza, Upper Moon Three, arrives on the scene and the tone changes completely, as told in our portrait of Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira.
Beheaded through the engine
Enmu’s neck was in the engine compartment. Tanjiro and Inosuke cut off the top of the engine, which is the same act as a classic beheading.
The one who finds the neck has his own piece, mask pushed up, in the collection devoted to Inosuke Hashibira, next to the collection devoted to Tanjiro Kamado.

The dose of blood received from Muzan changes his behaviour in Demon Slayer. Enmu, until then cautious and methodical, becomes arrogant and hasty, because he glimpses a possibility: rising to the Upper Moons.
This change shows in the way he talks. The cautious demon of the beginning becomes talkative, congratulates himself on his plan, and explains to his opponents what he is going to do to them before doing it.
His plan is precise. Obtain more blood, request a blood battle against a higher rank, and take their place. The procedure exists, as detailed in our article on the Twelve Kizuki and their ranks.
This ambition explains his mistake. Instead of killing Tanjiro quickly, he lingers, notices his earrings, thinks about the reward their owner represents, and gives his opponents time to find his neck.
The story is clear about his level. Enmu is the strongest of the lower ranks and the closest to the upper ones, but he remains far behind the weakest of them, as detailed in our article on the strongest demons in the story.
An ambition that slows him down
Enmu lingers over Tanjiro because he is already thinking about his promotion. This delay gives Inosuke time to find his neck.
What his arc changes in the story
Enmu is the last lower rank in Demon Slayer. After him, the group no longer exists, and Muzan leads only the six Upper Moons, as told in our article on the Lower Moons executed by Muzan.
His place in the series remains special. No other lower rank lasts more than a few pages, and he takes up an entire movie, which makes him the best-known low-ranking demon among the public.
His arc also serves as a demonstration. Two low-ranking demon slayers cut the neck of a demon Moon while the Hashira on hand protects the passengers, which had never happened before in the story.
What immediately follows is the hardest part. Rengoku’s death, a few minutes after Enmu’s, turns a victory into mourning, and our page of every arc of the story places this passage in the whole.
The movie devoted to this arc broke box-office records for Japanese cinema on its release, and the page on the viewing order of the seasons and movies shows where to place it.
The end of a group
With Enmu disappears the last Lower Moon. Muzan never re-forms this rank and makes do with the six upper ones until the final battle.
You will find his look from the movie, long black coat and striped trousers, among the demon outfits, and his whole camp in the collection of all the shop’s demons.
