Every Demon Slayer character: the complete directory

In short. Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado and his sister Nezuko, surrounded by two travelling companions, Zenitsu and Inosuke, then by Kanao and Genya. Around them revolve the nine Hashira, their former masters, the members of the Demon Slayer Corps led by Kagaya Ubuyashiki, two allied demons and, on the other side, Muzan Kibutsuji and his demon Moons. This directory presents each of them, with their role and the details given by the author.

The hero

Tanjiro Kamado

The eldest son of a family of charcoal sellers, he becomes a demon slayer to give his sister back her humanity. His sense of smell, his kindness and his Dance of the Fire God make him a hero like no other. Everything about Tanjiro, the hero of the series.

Nezuko Kamado

Transformed by Muzan, she refuses to devour humans and fights with her Exploding Blood, a bamboo muzzle in her mouth. Everything about Nezuko, Tanjiro’s sister.

Their bond carries the whole story of Demon Slayer: by day, Tanjiro carries Nezuko asleep in a wooden box on his back, and by night, she protects him in every fight.

二 The same class

Tanjiro’s companions

Zenitsu and Inosuke form, with Tanjiro, the most famous trio in the series. Kanao and Genya passed the Final Selection at the same time as him, and their paths cross all the way to the final battle.

The trio belongs to the same class, but each has their own sixth sense in combat: Tanjiro’s sense of smell, Zenitsu’s hearing and the sensitivity of Inosuke’s skin, which perceives the slightest movement in the air.

Cowardly and talkative, in love with Nezuko at first sight, he becomes formidable once asleep. A disciple of Jigoro Kuwajima, he only learned the First Form of his breathing style, which he takes to perfection.

The masters and elders of Kimetsu no Yaiba

Behind every demon slayer stands a master, often a former Hashira. Some characters from the past also weigh on the whole story. These bonds between generations form the backbone of Kimetsu no Yaiba: every technique is passed down from master to student.

The Demon Slayer Corps and its supporters

Kagaya Ubuyashiki and his family

Leader of the Corps at only 23, Kagaya leads the demon slayers with a gentleness that commands the respect of the Hashira themselves, despite the illness eating away at his face. His family has funded and rebuilt the Corps for generations.

Aoi Kanzaki and the nurses

At Shinobu’s Butterfly Mansion, Aoi Kanzaki and little Kiyo, Sumi and Naho care for the wounded and lead the trio’s Rehabilitation Training.

Hotaru Haganezuka and Kotetsu

Tanjiro’s swordsmith, Hotaru Haganezuka has a jealous passion for swords. In the Swordsmith Village, young Kotetsu shows Tanjiro the Yoriichi Type Zero puppet, which hides an ancient blade.

The Kakushi, the crows and Murata

The Kakushi, like Goto, clean up after the battles and carry the wounded. The Kasugai crows deliver mission orders, and Zenitsu ends up with a sparrow. Murata, an ordinary demon slayer, survives almost every battle.

Tamayo and Yushiro

Freed from Muzan’s control, the demon doctor Tamayo is searching for a cure, protected by Yushiro, the only demon she has ever created.

五 The hierarchy

The ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps

Below the Hashira, the Corps has ten ranks, from the lowest, Mizunoto, given to new recruits, to the highest, Kinoe. Their names come from the ten Heavenly Stems of the traditional calendar.

A demon slayer’s rank appears on the back of their hand when they clench their fist. To become a Hashira, a Kinoe must notably slay fifty demons or one of the Twelve Kizuki.
