The story of Tanjiro, from charcoal seller to the final battle

In short

Tanjiro’s story begins in the first chapter of Demon Slayer: a thirteen-year-old charcoal seller, he comes home to find his family massacred by Muzan. Only his sister Nezuko survives, turned into a demon. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps to make her human again, learns Water Breathing, rediscovers his father’s Dance of the Fire God, and holds the first demon back until sunrise, two years later.

The first chapter of Demon Slayer begins with a climb. Tanjiro is coming back from the village, his empty basket on his back, because the snow stopped him from going back up the day before. When he reaches the house, the smell tells him everything before he has seen anything.

In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro Kamado is a hero with no innate gift, who makes up for it with hard work and an extraordinary nose. This article follows his story in order: his childhood, the night of the massacre, his training, his breathing styles, his mark, and the place he takes alongside the Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps. To learn everything about the character, our page about the hero of Demon Slayer in full brings this whole branch together.

What kind of boy is Tanjiro at the start of the story?

Profile Detail
Japanese name 竈門 炭治郎 (Kamado Tanjirō)
Age thirteen in the first chapter, fifteen at the final battle
Height and weight 165 cm, 61 kg
Original trade charcoal seller
Breathing styles used Water Breathing, then the Dance of the Fire God
Distinguishing feature a scar on his forehead and hanafuda earrings
First appearance chapter 1 of the manga, episode 1 of the anime
Ancestor Sumiyoshi, a friend of Yoriichi Tsugikuni
Status at the end alive, human again

In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro is the eldest of six children, raised on a mountain by a sick father and a mother who runs the household. The family lives off the charcoal it produces, which the boy goes to sell in the nearest village.

He looks like an ordinary boy of the Taishō era, with two details everyone notices. A scar on his forehead, and hanafuda card earrings inherited from his father.

His character is the real subject of the character in Demon Slayer. He is patient, polite, incapable of contempt, and he apologises to the demons he has just killed, which no one else in the Corps does.

The story insists on a point few shonen heroes share. Tanjiro despises no one, never seeks to humiliate an opponent, and refuses to see a demon as anything other than a human to whom something has happened.

This gentleness does not stop him from being formidable. He breaks Genya Shinazugawa’s arm and Inosuke’s ribs in fits of anger, and knocks out the Wind Hashira with a headbutt.

A hero with no innate gift

Tanjiro has neither a line of swordsmen nor an innate talent for combat. He has an extraordinary sense of smell, a will nothing can dent, and two years of hard work.

The checked silhouette opens the complete Tanjiro Kamado collection, right down to the cosplay outfits from the series.

The charcoal seller from the mountain

The life of the Kamado family before the Demon Slayer story takes up just a few pages, and the story often comes back to it. The father, Tanjuro, dies of illness while Tanjiro is still a child, which makes the boy the household’s mainstay at thirteen.

He goes down to sell the charcoal in the village, helps the locals at the drop of a hat, and becomes known as the boy with an extraordinary sense of smell.

One scar dates from this period. His brother Takeo knocks over a brazier, Tanjiro shields him, and the burn marks his forehead permanently.

The rest of the family is detailed in our article on the Kamado family and its seven members, and his father’s life in our article on the Dance of the Fire God.

The father

Tanjuro, sick, died young, and the keeper of knowledge no one appreciated.

The mother

Kie, who runs the house alone with six children after his death.

The elder

Tanjiro, who sells the charcoal, looks after the little ones and never complains.

The night of the massacre

In Demon Slayer, everything changes in one night. Tanjiro goes down to the village to sell his charcoal, the snow prevents him from going back up, and an old man puts him up, warning him that a demon is prowling the mountain.

He returns the next morning. The smell of blood reaches him before the house, and he finds his mother and four of his brothers and sisters dead, in a scene the story does not spare him.

Nezuko is still breathing. He carries her on his back and runs towards the village, and it is during this descent that she wakes up transformed into a demon and lunges at him.

Giyu Tomioka arrives at that moment and is about to execute her. Tanjiro begs, his forehead in the snow, then attacks him with an axe and fails, and it is Nezuko’s gesture of protecting her brother that stays the Hashira’s blade.

The full details of this encounter can be found in our article on Tanjiro and Giyu Tomioka, and those of the culprit in our article on Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon.

Two survivors out of seven

The massacre leaves only Tanjiro, absent that night, and Nezuko, transformed. The other five members of the family die in the house.

The two years of training

What follows is the longest time skip in Demon Slayer. Tomioka sends him to his own master, Sakonji Urokodaki, a former Water Hashira who lives on Mount Sagiri. The old man tests him by letting him loose on the mountain at night, among the traps.

The training lasts more than a year and feels like torture. Runs at altitude, dodging blades, Total Concentration Breathing, and a final test Tanjiro does not pass: splitting a boulder with a single sword stroke.

Two masked children help him without him understanding who they are, and our article on Sabito and Makomo, the spirits of Mount Sagiri tells this part.

The details of this training matter for what follows. Tanjiro first learns to breathe, then to move, and finally to cut, and his master stops teaching him anything the day he shows him the boulder.

He splits the boulder at the end of a second year, then leaves for the Final Selection, seven nights on a wisteria-covered mountain, told in our article on the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane.

His master’s portrait can be found in our article on Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro’s master.

A boulder, one more year

Urokodaki’s final test consists of splitting a boulder with a blade stroke. It takes Tanjiro a year to manage it, with the help of two dead students.

Water Breathing, then the Dance of the Fire God

In Demon Slayer, Urokodaki teaches him Water Breathing, ten forms derived from the original breathing style, and Tanjiro becomes good enough at it to bring down Kyogai, a former member of the Twelve Kizuki.

Yet the style does not suit him. During his fight against Rui on Mount Natagumo, at the moment he should die, he remembers his father performing a ritual dance in the snow, and he reproduces it.

This dance is the Hinokami Kagura, which his family passed down as a New Year ritual without knowing what it was. It is in fact Sun Breathing, the origin of all the others, detailed on our page about every breathing style in Demon Slayer.

The change of style transforms his fights. Water Breathing demands fluidity, Sun Breathing pure stamina, and Tanjiro spends months only able to sustain it for a few seconds before collapsing.

He eventually switches between the two styles during his fight against Gyutaro, Water to absorb blows and Sun to strike.

A New Year ritual

The dance Tanjuro Kamado performed in the snow every New Year is the first breathing style in history. His family danced it without knowing what they were passing on.

You will find both styles in three dimensions among the figures from across the series.

His sense of smell, his most personal weapon

Tanjiro’s nose is the trait that sets him apart from the first chapter of Demon Slayer. He detects demons at a distance, judges their strength by their scent, and senses the emotions of the people around him.

He picks up sadness, lies, suppressed anger. That is what allows him to tell Shinobu Kocho that she is constantly furious behind her smile, something no one had dared tell her.

In combat, he follows what he calls the opening thread, a sensation that tells him the moment to strike. The details of this sense can be found in our article on Tanjiro’s sense of smell and its limits.

This sense evolves with him. After training against a six-armed combat puppet, he becomes able to sense intentions before they happen, which gives him Hashira-level reflexes.

A sense that reads people

Tanjiro’s sense of smell perceives emotions, not just smells. That is what allows him to guess Shinobu’s anger behind her permanent smile.

The black sword and the red blade

In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro’s first Nichirin blade turns black, which worries everyone around him. Demon slayers consider this shade a bad omen, and no one knows what style it heralds.

The answer emerges much later: Yoriichi Tsugikuni, creator of Sun Breathing, carried the same black blade. Our article on the colour of Tanjiro’s sword details this superstition.

His blade then turns red, first thanks to Nezuko’s flames, then through his own mastery. A blade that has turned red prevents a demon from regenerating, which changes everything against an Upper Moon.

Our page on Nichirin swords and how they are made explains where these colours come from and how the Swordsmith Village produces these weapons.

A colour no one wants

Demon slayers regard the black blade as a bad sign. Much later, the story shows that Yoriichi Tsugikuni carried the same one.

You will find the black blade as a replica among all the shop’s katanas.

The mark and the Transparent World

In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro’s forehead scar transforms during his fight against Gyutaro. It spreads, changes shape, and becomes the Demon Slayer Mark, which multiplies its bearer’s strength and speed.

The price of this mark has long been known. Its bearers die before the age of twenty-five, as explained in our article on the Demon Slayer Mark and its price.

He then gains access to the Transparent World, the perception that reveals an opponent’s blood flow, muscles and joints. His father used it to bring down a bear with a single blow, without ever speaking of it.

He adds a rare ability to it, the complete erasure of his fighting spirit, which lets him slip under Akaza’s Compass Needle and cut off his head. The details of his awakening are told in our article on Tanjiro’s mark and its origin.

Those who travel with him

Tanjiro never progresses alone in Demon Slayer. Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira follow him from the drum house onwards, and our article on the Demon Slayer trio tells of their dynamic.

Kanao Tsuyuri enters his life at the Butterfly Mansion, where he recovers after Mount Natagumo. Their relationship is detailed in our article on Tanjiro and Kanao Tsuyuri.

The Hashira at first treat him as a problem, since he travels with a demon, then end up training him one by one during the general training, as told in our article on the Hashira Training.

His sister remains at the centre of everything. Our page about Nezuko Kamado and her transformation details what becomes of her on her side.

A demon on his back

Tanjiro carries Nezuko in a wooden box for almost the entire story. No other demon slayer in Demon Slayer travels with a demon.

The sister carried on his back has her own section, the complete Nezuko Kamado collection, and his two companions theirs, the complete Zenitsu Agatsuma collection and the complete Inosuke Hashibira collection.

The last fight and the ending

The final battle of Demon Slayer plays out in a single night, in the Infinity Castle and then in a city, and Tanjiro faces first Akaza and then Muzan, as told in our articles on Akaza, Upper Moon Three and the last fight against Muzan.

He loses an eye and the use of an arm there, receives the first demon’s blood, and almost dies. With his last act, Muzan turns him into a demon, to make him his successor.

His loved ones bring him back. Kanao injects him with the last dose of remedy, Nezuko calls out to him, and he becomes human again with permanent after-effects.

What becomes of the character afterwards is detailed in our article on Tanjiro Kamado’s ending, and our article on what makes this hero different looks back at his place in shonen.

An eye and an arm

Tanjiro comes out of the final battle of Demon Slayer with one eye lost and one arm useless. The story gives him back neither.
