In short
The Demon Slayer trio brings together Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira, three recruits from the same Final Selection session. They meet on two successive missions, at a village and then in a house with shifting rooms, and are never apart again. A boy who is too kind, a coward who only fights in his sleep and a child raised by wild boars: the group holds together through what each makes up for in the other two.
Contents
There is a casting idea in Demon Slayer that accounts for half the series’ success. Instead of giving the hero two competent companions, the author gives him a crybaby and a brute, and leaves them to muddle through together for twenty-three volumes.
The result works because the three personalities never overlap. This article details how they met, their three senses, what each brings to the others, the fights where the group works, and what becomes of them in the end. Our page about the hero of Demon Slayer in full opens this branch.

The three boys come out of the same Final Selection, with Kanao Tsuyuri and Genya Shinazugawa, and these five are the only survivors out of about twenty candidates. Our article on the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane tells of this trial.
None of the three has a family at the time of the story. Tanjiro lost his in one night, Zenitsu never knew his, and Inosuke’s mother died when he was a baby, which gives the group its role as a substitute family.
The detail that makes Demon Slayer readers laugh lies in the vocabulary. Inosuke never manages to remember Tanjiro’s name and calls him Gonpachiro, Kentaro or Tontaro depending on the chapter, without anyone correcting him.
Three out of twenty
The three boys come out of the same Final Selection, along with two other survivors out of about twenty candidates.
How does Tanjiro meet Zenitsu?
The first encounter in Demon Slayer takes place in a village, and it is appalling. On a road, Tanjiro finds a blond boy in tears, clinging to a stranger he begs to marry him, who explains that he is going to die on his next mission.
And yet Zenitsu Agatsuma is a fully fledged demon slayer, from the same intake as him. He has a sparrow as his messenger bird, where the others have a crow, which does not help him earn respect.
His story explains his panic. An orphan, deceived by a girl who ran off with his money, he finds himself riddled with debt, and a former Thunder Hashira buys up his debt and decides to train him in the sword.
This old man, whom he calls Grandpa, teaches him Thunder Breathing. Zenitsu never manages to master more than the First Form, which ought to make him a mediocre swordsman, and produces the opposite.
A single form out of six
Zenitsu has only ever mastered the First Form of Thunder Breathing. He pushes it to a level the other five never reach.
You will find the blond boy’s section in the complete Zenitsu Agatsuma collection, right down to the plushes from the series.

The Demon Slayer trio forms for good in a house whose rooms keep changing places. Tanjiro and Zenitsu go in to save kidnapped children, and come across a third demon slayer already inside.
Inosuke Hashibira wears a boar’s head as a mask, two serrated blades, no top, and attacks Tanjiro as soon as he sees him, on principle. The fight ends when the boy headbutts him and knocks him out.
His past comes much later in Demon Slayer, and it is the darkest of the three. His mother had fled a violent husband, then taken refuge in a cult whose leader was a demon, and she threw her baby into a river to save him before being devoured.
Wild boars raised the child in the mountains. The mask he wears is the head of his adoptive mother, and he invented his fighting style, Beast Breathing, on his own, with no master or model.
Our article on Kyogai, the drum demon tells of this founding fight, and our article on Doma, Upper Moon Two presents the cult leader in question.
A mask that is a mother
Inosuke’s boar’s head is that of the beast that raised him. He learned the sword on his own, in the mountains, without ever seeing a demon slayer.
The boar mask opens the complete Inosuke Hashibira collection, from plushes to figures from across the series.

The group’s comic engine is the gap in temperament, and Demon Slayer exploits it in almost every chapter. Tanjiro thanks people, apologises, asks forgiveness of the demons he kills. Zenitsu screams that he is going to die. Inosuke wants to fight anything that moves.
The three react in opposite ways to kindness. Tanjiro hands it out, Zenitsu demands it, Inosuke does not understand it and at first thinks people are trying to tie him up when they come near him.
The group also has a cultural gap. Zenitsu is the only one who grew up in a city, he knows how an inn or a train works, and he spends his time embarrassed by the other two’s naivety.
Their attitude towards women completes the list. Zenitsu proposes to every girl he meets, Tanjiro notices nothing, and Inosuke does not grasp the subject, which causes most of the blond boy’s meltdowns.
Three reactions to kindness
Tanjiro gives it, Zenitsu demands it, Inosuke takes it for a trap. All the trio’s comedy comes from there.
Three senses, three styles
The real writing work on the Demon Slayer trio lies elsewhere, in the distribution of the senses. Each of the three perceives the world through a different channel, and the story uses this to resolve entire fights.
Tanjiro smells. He detects a demon by its scent, judges its strength, and finds the moment to strike. Our article on Tanjiro’s sense of smell and its limits details this sense.
Zenitsu hears. He perceives the sound a person makes, deduces their state of mind from it, and detects an enemy beneath a floor or behind a wall, which makes him a better lookout than any other Demon Slayer swordsman.
Inosuke feels. He senses the vibrations of the air on his skin and builds himself a map of his surroundings, which lets him work out the shape of a building or the position of several opponents without seeing them.
The three fighting styles follow the same logic. Water demands fluidity, Thunder pure speed in a straight line, Beast flexibility and the unexpected, and none of the three can do what the other two do.
A nose, an ear, a skin
The trio covers three channels of perception. Outside the group, each loses the information the other two provided.
What each brings to the other two
In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro brings the direction. He is the only one of the three with a reason to fight that does not come from himself, and this stubbornness pulls the other two forward every time they want to give up.
Zenitsu brings fear, and it is a contribution. He is the only one who assesses danger correctly, who wants to flee when it is time to flee, and several of the group’s survivals hinge on his screams of warning.
Inosuke brings movement. He goes in where the others hesitate, takes blows without thinking, and his total lack of caution unblocks situations where thinking would have taken too long.
The gain is visible in Inosuke in Demon Slayer, and the story stresses it. He starts by rejecting any idea of teamwork, then borrows tactics from experienced demon slayers, learns to recognise others’ strength, and ends up naturally taking a support role.
Fear as a skill
Zenitsu is the only member of the group who measures danger correctly. His cowardice saves the trio more often than the other two’s courage.
The third completes the set in the complete Tanjiro Kamado collection, and the directory of the series’ characters places the other recruits from their intake.

The train arc puts the trio under a Hashira’s command for the first time. The three boys board with the Flame Hashira, and are put to sleep by a Lower Moon’s Blood Demon Art.
Tanjiro cuts his own throat in a dream to wake up, and Nezuko’s fire burns the ropes holding the other two. Zenitsu then fights asleep, as usual, and Inosuke charges towards the front of the train.
The group shares out the carriages with their senior, and it is the first time the series gives them a defensive objective. Our article on Enmu, Lower Moon One tells of this fight.
The end of the arc marks all three for a long time. They watch the Flame Hashira die before their eyes, powerless to do anything, and our article on Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira comes back to that night.
One train, three methods
Tanjiro escapes the dream by cutting his throat, Zenitsu protects the carriages while asleep, Inosuke charges towards the engine. None does what the others do.
The Entertainment District, the full trio
The next arc is the one where the group works best. The three boys dress up as girls to get into the district’s houses, under the orders of the Sound Hashira, and divide up the search.
The fight that follows comes down to coordination. Inosuke finds the bodies hidden in the demon girl’s obi, then cuts off the sister’s head with Zenitsu at the very moment Tanjiro and the Sound Hashira cut off the brother’s, and no one could settle this matter alone.
The result is a historic first in Demon Slayer. The group brings down an Upper Moon alongside the Sound Hashira, which had not happened in a hundred and thirteen years, and our article on Daki and Gyutaro, Upper Moon Six details the clash.
All three come out of it in a pitiful state. Tanjiro spends months recovering, the Sound Hashira loses an eye and a hand, and the group does not go back on a mission until the Swordsmith Village.
The first in a hundred and thirteen years
The trio and the Sound Hashira bring down an Upper Moon. None had fallen in a hundred and thirteen years.
The Infinity Castle, a demon for each
The final battle of Demon Slayer splits up the group, and that is deliberate. The first demon’s castle scatters the demon slayers into different rooms, and the three boys each face an opponent who is personal to them.
Zenitsu runs into his master’s former student, now a demon and the new Upper Moon Six, which drove the old man to take his own life. He beats him alone with the Seventh Form he invented himself, and our article on Kaigaku, the student turned demon tells of this settling of scores.
Inosuke runs into the demon who devoured his mother. He fights him alongside Kanao Tsuyuri after the Insect Hashira’s death, and our article on Doma and Shinobu, the poison trap details this fight.
Tanjiro runs into Upper Moon Three, alongside the Water Hashira. The division is clear: each of the three settles a debt that belongs to him alone, and the story only reunites them for the final clash.
Three debts, three demons
The final battle gives each the opponent who is his to face: Zenitsu’s senior, the murderer of Inosuke’s mother, and the killer of a Hashira for Tanjiro.
One staging detail is worth noting in passing. The three boys wear the same uniform, and the author makes them recognisable in a single panel by silhouette alone: a green checkerboard, a yellow gradient with triangles, a boar’s head.
Three silhouettes in one panel
Green checkerboard, yellow gradient with triangles, boar’s head. The three boys can be recognised from behind, without a word of dialogue.
What becomes of them in the end?
All three survive, which was not guaranteed in a story that kills so many characters. Tanjiro loses an eye and the use of an arm, the other two come out in one piece, and all spend several months recovering.
Zenitsu ends up marrying Nezuko, which he had been announcing since the first day without anyone taking him seriously. The story shows their descendants in the present day, with the same hair and the same personality.
Inosuke also starts a family, and his descendants appear in the last pages of Demon Slayer. His descendant there is a botanist, which is the most understated joke in the epilogue.
Our article on what becomes of Tanjiro in the end details the third one’s fate, and our page about Nezuko Kamado and her transformation that of his sister.
Three survivors
The three boys end the story alive. Two of them start families whose descendants appear in the epilogue.
