Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira of Demon Slayer, butterfly-wing haori

Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira of Demon Slayer

In short

Shinobu Kocho is the Insect Hashira of Demon Slayer, the only one of the nine who cannot behead a demon. At 151 centimetres and 37 kilos, she makes up for it with a thin-bladed sword that injects a poison made from wisteria. She runs the Butterfly Mansion, treats wounded demon slayers and spends more than a year preparing her sister Kanae’s revenge against Doma, Upper Moon Two.

Shinobu Kocho, Insect Hashira of Demon Slayer, smiling, at the Hashira meeting

She smiles all the time, in every scene of Demon Slayer she appears in. That is precisely what makes Tanjiro uneasy the first time he meets her: behind the smile, he senses permanent anger.

Shinobu Kocho is the most deceptive character in Demon Slayer. This portrait traces her story, her fighting style unique among the nine Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, the Butterfly Mansion and the plan she takes more than a year to prepare.

In Demon Slayer, Shinobu is the smallest of the nine Hashira and the only one without the strength to cut through a demon’s neck. She wears her older sister’s white haori, whose sleeves shift from turquoise to pink in a wing pattern, and a dark purple uniform with gold buttons.

Her tone is light, her sentences polite, her smile constant. Zenitsu finds her adorable, Tomioka takes her jabs without knowing what to reply, and the wounded at the Butterfly Mansion see her as the gentlest person in the Corps.

The story takes this image apart layer by layer. Shinobu hates demons with an intensity she hides behind her politeness, because they took her parents, then her sister, then most of her students. Tanjiro, whose sense of smell reads emotions, is the first to say out loud that she is angry all the time.

This anger has a simple reason, which the story takes several arcs to lay out: Shinobu watched her parents die, then her sister, then most of the students she had trained. Her politeness is the only way she found to stay on her feet.

This butterfly-wing haori is the centrepiece of her outfit among the cosplays of the nine Hashira, where all nine haori can be found. You will find the pattern on every kind of product in the collection devoted to Shinobu Kocho.

Kanae, the sister and the promise

The Kocho parents worked in preparing medicines, which explains their daughter’s knowledge of poisons. A demon kills them while Shinobu and Kanae are still children. A demon slayer saves the two sisters, and both join the Corps.

Kanae becomes the Flower Hashira. She dreams of a world where humans and demons could get along, and pushes her younger sister to live for something other than revenge. At seventeen, she falls against Doma, Upper Moon Two, who leaves her to die at daybreak.

Shinobu takes up her sister’s haori and her idea of reconciling with demons, which she repeats like a courtesy but applies to no one. Her full story is told in our article on Kanae Kocho, the former Flower Hashira.

Kanae Kocho

Her older sister, the Flower Hashira, killed by Doma. Shinobu wears her haori to the very end.

Kanao Tsuyuri

Taken in by the two sisters, raised at the Butterfly Mansion, she will finish the job they began.

Aoi Kanzaki

Her right hand at the Mansion, who runs the household while Shinobu is away on missions.

Insect Breathing and the poison sword

Insect Breathing derives from her sister’s Flower Breathing, itself born of Water Breathing. Our page on every breathing style in Demon Slayer details this lineage.

Lacking strength, Shinobu reinvents the weapon. Her Nichirin blade drops the usual shape: a thin point, pierced with an opening that injects the poison, mounted on a wing-shaped guard. She changes the composition of the mixture every time she sheathes it, depending on the demon she is targeting.

Form English name What the technique does
Dance of the Bee Sting True Flutter a single thrust, delivered at full speed to the neck
Dance of the Dragonfly Compound Eye Hexagon six stings in a row on the same spot
Dance of the Centipede Hundred-Legged Zigzag a zigzag run that makes her path impossible to read
Butterfly Dance Caprice a series of thrusts delivered while gliding

Her speed makes up for everything else: she is the fastest of the nine in pure movement. The other weapon types used by the Hashira are detailed in our article on the Hashira’s weapons, and the blades themselves on our page about Nichirin swords and their colours.

A poison made from wisteria

Wisteria repels demons throughout the work. Shinobu extracts from it a poison that she doses according to the target, and whose composition she changes between two sheathings.

This thin blade inspired an unexpected item in the catalogue, which you will find among the shop’s umbrellas: a model whose handle reproduces the hilt of the sword and whose canopy reproduces the haori.

Mount Natagumo and the threat to Nezuko

Shinobu enters the story of Demon Slayer on Mount Natagumo, where a family of spider demons is decimating a team of demon slayers. There she kills the spider mother after making her believe she would spare her, a scene that shows both sides of the character at once.

Then she finds Tanjiro and Nezuko. Her sword rises over the demon girl, and only Giyu’s arrival stops the blow. The two Hashira face off without fighting, she with her smile, he with his silence, and the scene sets up their relationship for the rest of the series.

At headquarters, during Tanjiro’s trial, Shinobu does not ask for Nezuko’s death but does not defend her either. She observes. The full meeting is told in our article on the Hashira meeting and Tanjiro’s trial.

Her opinion changes at the Butterfly Mansion, when she treats the demon girl and sees that she attacks no one. Shinobu then accepts the exception, out of pragmatism as much as medical curiosity.

Two sides in one scene

On Mount Natagumo, Shinobu promises to help a demon, then kills her straight away. It is the first time the smile and the hatred appear together.

The Butterfly Mansion

Shinobu runs a place unique in the Corps: an estate that serves as a hospital, a school and a home all at once. Wounded demon slayers are treated there, then put back on their feet by Rehabilitation Training, which Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke go through after Mount Natagumo.

Three little girls work there, Sumi, Kiyo and Naho, with Aoi Kanzaki running the household and Kanao as a student. It is one of the few peaceful settings in Demon Slayer, and the only one where there is more healing than fighting. The place is calm and full of flowers, and it is there that Tanjiro learns to keep up his breathing constantly, a step that brings him up to the level of the missions that follow.

It is also at this estate that Shinobu treats Nezuko and changes her mind about her, after threatening her on Mount Natagumo. The encounter between the two plays out without a harsh word, and our page on Nezuko Kamado, Tanjiro’s sister looks back on this period.

Hospital and school

The Butterfly Mansion treats the wounded and trains those recovering. It is the only place in the Corps where you learn to breathe rather than to strike.

The plan against Doma

This section reveals the end of the manga.

The final act of Demon Slayer is prepared long in advance. For more than a year, Shinobu ingests wisteria poison continuously. Her body absorbs it without killing her and stores it, until her 37 kilos become a dose able to bring down an Upper Moon. No one knows, apart from Kanao and the residents of the Mansion who help her hold on.

In the Infinity Castle, she finds Doma again. The fight quickly turns against her: she cannot touch him long enough to poison a body that regenerates. The demon seizes her and absorbs her, exactly as she hoped.

The poison works from the inside. Doma gradually loses his abilities while Kanao and Inosuke fight him, and he finally falls. All these fights are told on our page about the demons and the demon Moons, and placed in the story on the page covering every arc.

Shinobu dies without landing a single decisive blow. Yet she is the one who kills Doma. The list of Hashira who do not come back from the final battle can be found in our article on the Hashira who die in Demon Slayer.

Thirty-seven kilos of poison

Shinobu turns her own body into a weapon. The weight she considers too little to behead a demon becomes the exact dose that kills a higher-ranking one.

Shinobu in the anime, the manga and the games

The character is present from the start of Kimetsu no Yaiba, but her role grows in stages.

Medium What you see of Shinobu there
Manga a silhouette in chapter 4, then from her real entrance in chapter 28 to the Infinity Castle
Season 1 of the anime Mount Natagumo, Tanjiro’s trial, then the Butterfly Mansion
Hashira Training arc she runs no station and prepares her plan against Doma
Final battle the duel against Doma, the climax of her story
Kimetsu Academy the high school nurse in the parody version
Video games playable character in the fighting games based on the series

Her playable version is among the characters of the video games based on Demon Slayer, and the order in which to follow her appearances is detailed on our page about the order of the seasons and movies.

Absent from the training

Shinobu is one of only two Hashira not to run a station during the training. She spends those weeks preparing her poison.

As figures, she comes in several poses, and the other eight swordsmen await in the collection of demon slayer and Hashira figures, itself part of the figures of the universe.

Shinobu and the other Hashira

Giyu Tomioka is her favourite target. She teases him relentlessly, tells him everyone hates him, and remains the only one whose death provokes a visible reaction in the Water Hashira.

Mitsuri Kanroji is her closest friend, the two being the only female Hashira after Kanae’s death. Mitsuri teaches her Western cooking, and the Love Hashira speaks of her like an older sister.

Kyojuro Rengoku shares her energy without sharing her method, and the Flame Hashira supports her during Tanjiro’s trial.

Sanemi Shinazugawa can hardly stand her, which does not stop him from listening when she talks medicine.

Her place in power comparisons is debated, since her raw numbers are the weakest of the nine: our ranking of the Hashira by power explains why she remains formidable all the same, and the conditions for becoming a Hashira recall what her rank requires.

What Shinobu leaves behind

Her death is unlike any other in Demon Slayer: she has no last words, no farewell scene, just a disappearance inside a demon’s body. What she leaves behind is nonetheless considerable.

  • Kanao Tsuyuri inherits the mission and the method. She is the one who lands the final blow on Doma, with Inosuke, using the techniques and the poison developed by her adoptive sister.
  • The Butterfly Mansion keeps running during the final battle, and its residents treat the wounded coming back from the Infinity Castle.
  • The Corps’ medicine owes her the antidote used against the Upper Moons’ poisons, prepared at the Mansion from her notes.

She is also proof, in a story where everything is decided by the strength of the sword, that a Hashira can win without cutting. The debate comes up regularly among readers, and our article on the Hashira marks and their price recalls that she never awakens one, for lack of the physical condition.

She wins without landing the blow

Shinobu dies without defeating Doma with her sword. The poison she stored for a year kills him anyway, by Kanao’s hand.
