In short
Kanae Kocho is the former Flower Hashira of Demon Slayer, Shinobu’s older sister and Kanao’s adoptive sister. Saved as a child by Gyomei Himejima after her parents were slaughtered, she joins the Demon Slayer Corps and dreams of a world where humans and demons could live together. She dies at 17, killed by Doma, Upper Moon Two, and leaves her two sisters a haori and a revenge.
Contents
She only appears in memories and in one bonus chapter of Demon Slayer, and yet everything Shinobu Kocho does in Demon Slayer stems from her. Kanae Kocho is the Hashira whose absence shapes a good part of the story.
This portrait traces her childhood, her place among the Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, her Flower Breathing, her death against Doma and what she leaves her two sisters.

In Demon Slayer, Kanae is recognisable by the white haori whose sleeves shift from turquoise to pink, the one Shinobu then wears without ever taking it off. The same slight figure as her younger sister, the same constant smile, and a gentleness the other demon slayers describe as disarming.
Her character is the inverted mirror of Shinobu’s. Where the younger sister smiles to hide her anger, the elder smiles because she sincerely believes what she says: that demons are victims, and that a world where the two species could coexist is still possible.
This conviction is not naivety. Kanae watched her parents die before her eyes, she knows exactly what a demon does, and she chooses this path anyway.
This butterfly-wing haori is the most used pattern in the section: you will find it among the throws and wearable blankets as well as in the cosplays of the demon slayers, right down to a hooded cape that reproduces its gradient.

The starting point of the Kocho sisters resembles that of the Kamado family in Demon Slayer. They grow up in a well-off, loving family, until the night a demon enters their home. The parents step in and are killed in front of their daughters.
The two girls hide while their parents buy a few seconds at the cost of their lives. Those seconds decide everything else. The two children would have followed if a demon slayer had not arrived at that exact moment: Gyomei Himejima, the future Stone Hashira, kills the demon before it reaches them. His story is told in our article on Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira.
Kanae and Shinobu promise each other to join the Corps so that no one has to live through that night again. Both quickly succeed, and the elder reaches the rank of Hashira.

Gyomei Himejima
The demon slayer who arrives in time, kills the demon and saves the two sisters.
Kanao Tsuyuri
The child the two sisters later take in, who will inherit their fight.
Flower Breathing
Flower Breathing derives from Water Breathing, as our page of every breathing style in Demon Slayer details. It is from it that Shinobu will later draw her Insect Breathing.
| Form | English name | What the technique does |
|---|---|---|
| Second | Honorable Shadow Plum | a curving cut, delivered in motion |
| Fourth | Crimson Hanagoromo | a spiralling sequence around the target |
| Fifth | Peonies of Futility | a series of light, close strikes |
| Sixth | Whirling Peach | a full rotation of the body, blade extended |
| Final | Equinoctial Vermilion Eye | an acceleration of vision that slows everything else down, at the cost of eyesight |
The final form is the style’s best known, but it is Kanao Tsuyuri who uses it in the story, against Doma, and who pays the price. The complete style remains rare: it has only three known practitioners, the three sisters.
The weapons and styles of the other Hashira are compared in our article on the Hashira’s weapons, and how the blades are made on our page about Nichirin swords and their colours.
Her handling remains that of a light fighter: Kanae makes up for lack of strength with speed and unusual angles of attack, the same logic her younger sister will later adopt with her poison.
Three practitioners
Kanae, Shinobu, then Kanao: Flower Breathing never leaves the Kocho family, and each one adapts it to her own body.
From Flower Breathing to Insect Breathing
Kanae’s technical legacy splits because her two sisters’ bodies are not alike. In Demon Slayer, killing a demon with a blade means cutting through its neck in a single blow, a condition detailed in our article on how to kill a demon.
Shinobu does not have the necessary strength, and she says so bluntly. Rather than abandoning her sister’s style, she keeps its footwork, its lightness and its angles of attack, then replaces the cut with a point: her Nichirin sword ends in a stinger and injects wisteria poison with every strike.
The poison comes from a plant demons cannot stand, the one that also protects the houses where travelling demon slayers sleep, as our article on the wisteria houses and their flower tells.
Kanao, for her part, keeps Flower Breathing whole, final form included. The same training thus produces two styles: a breathing style preserved as is in the adopted younger sister, a breathing style reinvented around poison in the blood sister. Kanae dies without seeing either come to fruition.
A style split in two
Shinobu trades the cut for injection for lack of strength, Kanao keeps the style intact. Kanae’s legacy divides according to the body of the one who receives it.
The Butterfly Mansion and Kanao
Kanae founds one of the rare peaceful places in Demon Slayer, the one that will bear her stamp long after her death: the Butterfly Mansion, hospital, school and home all at once. Wounded demon slayers are treated there, then put back on their feet through Rehabilitation Training.
It is with Shinobu that she takes in Kanao, a little girl sold by her parents who has become unable to decide anything for herself. The two sisters feed her, train her and give her time.
Kanae gives her a coin and teaches her to toss it when a choice paralyses her. The gesture looks trivial and becomes one of the most important drivers of Kanao’s character, who relies on it for years before daring to decide on her own.
The Mansion keeps running after Kanae’s death, managed by Shinobu, Aoi Kanzaki and three children, Sumi, Kiyo and Naho. The details of this place can be found in our article on Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira.
A place that outlives her
The Butterfly Mansion is still running during the final battle, years after the death of the woman who founded it.
Her death against Doma
This section reveals events from the manga.
Kanae comes across Doma, Upper Moon Two of Demon Slayer, during a mission. The demon is everything she refuses to accept: he does not suffer, he regrets nothing, he eats humans with a smile and claims to be saving them.
The fight is quickly over. Mortally wounded, Kanae holds on until daybreak and dies in Shinobu’s arms, with her younger sister unable to do anything. Her opponent’s profile can be found on our page about the demons and the demon Moons.
Doma offers her, as he does all his victims, to save her by devouring her. Kanae refuses and holds out long enough for day to break on the demon. Her last words ask her sister to live a happy life, far from revenge. Shinobu will do exactly the opposite, while repeating Kanae’s words about getting along with demons, like a courtesy emptied of meaning.
Seventeen years old
Kanae dies at seventeen. Shinobu takes up her haori, her line about getting along with demons, and spends years preparing the revenge her sister had asked her to forget.
What Kanae leaves her two sisters
Her death shapes a large part of the second half of Demon Slayer, even though she died before the first chapter.
- Shinobu inherits the haori, the Mansion and an anger she takes more than a year to turn into a plan. She ingests wisteria poison continuously so that Doma dies by devouring her.
- Kanao inherits Flower Breathing and the final form. She is the one who lands the decisive blow against the demon who killed both her sisters.
- The Butterfly Mansion remains the only place in the Corps where there is more healing than fighting.
The circle closes in the Infinity Castle: Doma falls to Shinobu’s poison and Kanao’s blade, two weapons born of what Kanae left them. The order of these events is detailed on our page of every arc of Demon Slayer.
A revenge in two hands
The demon who kills Kanae dies from the poison prepared by Shinobu and from Kanao’s blade. Neither would have managed it alone.
In the catalogue too, Kanae only exists through her sisters: she has no range in her name, and the bedding set that brings her together with Shinobu is one of the rare products in which she appears. You will also find the pattern in the shop’s bedding and the shop’s posters.

Kanae defends an idea with no equivalent among the other Hashira of Demon Slayer: demons are humans transformed against their will, therefore victims before they are monsters, and a world where the two could live together remains imaginable.
The position is untenable in practice. A demon eats humans to survive, and none of the nine active swordsmen takes this view seriously. Shinobu herself repeats it without believing it, out of loyalty rather than conviction.
Yet the story does not prove her entirely wrong. Tamayo and Yushiro live without killing, Nezuko holds out for years without devouring anyone, and it is precisely on this ground that Tanjiro wins his trial before the Hashira. Our page on Nezuko Kamado, Tanjiro’s sister tells how this exception takes hold.
Kanae dies before seeing the proof. Her younger sister, however, will treat the demon girl at the Butterfly Mansion and end up accepting her, which amounts to proving her sister right through facts rather than words.
An idea no one follows
Kanae is the only one in the Corps who believes coexistence is possible. The story partly proves her right, years after her death, with Nezuko and then Tamayo.
Kanae and the other Hashira
Her rank appears in no power comparison, since no fight of hers is shown: our ranking of the Hashira by power is limited to the nine in office, and the conditions for becoming a Hashira recall what her title implied.
Kanae in the anime, the manga and the school version
| Medium | What you see of Kanae there |
|---|---|
| Manga | mentioned in chapter 50, seen in full in a bonus chapter |
| Anime | appearances in memories, from episode 24 |
| Butterfly Mansion arc | her founding role, told by Shinobu and Kanao |
| Final battle | present in memories during the duel against Doma |
| Kimetsu Academy | biology teacher, former student of the school |
The school version gives her what the main story denies her: in the school version Kimetsu Academy, Kanae is alive, teaches biology and runs the ikebana club. The order in which to follow her appearances is detailed on our page about the order of the seasons and movies.
Alive in the school version
Kimetsu Academy has Kanae at 21, in fine form. It is the only spin-off work in which the three Kocho sisters are alive at the same time.
With no figure in her name, it is through her younger sister that the family enters the collection of Hashira figures and the figures of the universe. The two younger sisters each have their own section: the collection devoted to Shinobu Kocho gathers the butterfly pattern on every kind of product, and the collection devoted to Kanao Tsuyuri takes up the eye of the final form.

Her first name is written in katakana, like Kanao’s, and not in hiragana like Shinobu’s.
She is three years older than Shinobu and five years older than Kanao.
Her haori passes to Shinobu after her death and remains visible in every one of her younger sister’s scenes.

Ai Kayano, her Japanese voice, also voices several leading roles in other series from the same period.
In the school version, she teaches biology and runs the flower-arranging club.
