Yushiro, the demon created by Tamayo, with a furious look

Who is Yushiro, Tamayo’s assistant?

In short

Yushiro is the only human in Demon Slayer turned into a demon by someone other than Muzan. Dying of an illness, he was transformed by Tamayo, whom he has followed everywhere since. His Blood Demon Art relies on paper talismans that hide or reveal a presence, and he uses them to hide an entire clinic, then to guide the Demon Slayer Corps during the final battle. He survives the war and becomes a painter.

He insults just about everyone, hits the hero for an ill-judged question, and turns out to be the last living demon in the story. Yushiro is the Demon Slayer character whose role grows most quietly, from unpleasant extra to decisive element of the last night.

This article goes back over his story: the sick man, the transformation, his character, his power, his place in the final battle and what becomes of him a century later. Our page on the directory of the series’ characters places him among the others.

The character enters Demon Slayer in Asakusa, at the same time as Tamayo, and from his very first conversation he calls Nezuko ugly.

His appearance is that of a short young man, with short hair shading from mint green to black and lavender eyes. He hides his demon pupils like his companion, and in the last battle carries a white backpack full of medical equipment.

His role is many-sided and never flattering. He assists Tamayo in her experiments, acts as her bodyguard, carries the equipment, and hides the place where they work.

The detail that defines him comes down to one word. Everything he does, throughout the story, he does for a single person.

His place in the story develops more than that of any other secondary character. Introduced as an unpleasant bodyguard in the eighth episode, he becomes a decisive link in the final battle more than a hundred and twenty chapters later, without ever changing his character.

Only one person matters

Yushiro never acts for himself. Everything he undertakes in the story has Tamayo as its sole reason.

You will find his white kimono and his turquoise streak among the figures from across the series, in the section of demon figures.

The dying man Tamayo transforms

His Demon Slayer story begins on a sickbed. Yushiro is a young man doomed by an incurable illness, at a time when no treatment exists, and he is on the verge of death.

Tamayo then offers him what Muzan had offered her, centuries earlier. The difference lies in the deal: she explains what he will become, what he will lose, and waits for his answer.

He accepts knowing full well. The transformation saves him, freezes him in a young man’s body, and binds him for good to the woman who operated on him.

The act is a medical feat as much as a personal one. Tamayo becomes the only one, after Muzan, able to turn a human into a demon, and she does it without the first demon’s blood.

Our article on Tamayo, the demon doctor tells how she came to this.

His age, incidentally, raises a question the series leaves aside. Transformed young, frozen in this body, he goes through the decades without ageing, and the companion books give him thirty-five years of existence at the time of the story.

Transformed with his consent

Yushiro was dying and said yes knowing everything. That is exactly what Muzan never did for any of his victims.

A demon outside Muzan’s line

Yushiro’s peculiarity decides his survival, and the story only points it out at the very end. Every demon in the story descends from the blood of the first of them, directly or through his creations.

He does not. His blood comes from Tamayo, who had freed herself from the hold, and this lineage places him outside the network Muzan controls.

The consequence arrives on the last page of the war. When the first demon dies, all demons disappear with him, and Yushiro remains standing.

A cat shares this situation. Chachamaru, turned into a demon by Tamayo just before the last battle, serves as messenger between the clinic and the demon slayers, and also survives.

Our article on how to kill a demon in the series explains this blood tie and what it implies.

He survives Muzan’s death

All demons die with the first of them. Yushiro and a cat remain, because they descend from Tamayo.

His character

The character is unpleasant, and Demon Slayer does not try to soften him. Yushiro is aggressive, sarcastic, quick to hit, and regards most people as nuisances.

His first conversation with Tanjiro sets the tone. He insults Nezuko, goes for the boy over a harmless question, and gets told off by Tamayo like a child.

His indifference goes a long way. During a fight in which Tanjiro and his sister are risking their lives, he suggests to Tamayo that they abandon them and flee, then claims he was joking when he sees her horrified face.

Yet he can do a good turn. After the fight, he presses a cloth over Tanjiro’s nose to stop him breathing in Tamayo’s blood, which is dangerous to humans.

The mix makes him one of the few Demon Slayer characters who stay unlikeable while being on the right side.

Unlikeable and an ally

Yushiro stays unpleasant from start to finish. He nonetheless fights on the humans’ side, right up to the last night.

His devotion to Tamayo

The character’s comic engine in Demon Slayer comes down to an obsession. Yushiro is in love with Tamayo, constantly calls her by a respectful form of address, and can barely stand anyone looking at her.

His reactions are out of all proportion. A compliment paid to the demon, a lingering look, a question about her age, and the boy hits the careless person without warning.

The story pushes the joke as far as the companion books. The series’ profiles state that his hobby is Tamayo herself, and that he keeps a diary in which he writes how remarkable she is.

Yet the joke has a serious core. This devotion is what makes him stay, work, fight, and survive a war that did not concern him.

Our article on Nezuko Kamado, Tanjiro’s sister presents the demon he starts out insulting.

A diary full of her

The series’ reference material indicates that Yushiro keeps a diary devoted to Tamayo, and that his hobby is Tamayo herself.

The talismans

His Demon Slayer Blood Demon Art has a name that says what it does. Yushiro makes paper talismans able to hide something’s presence or, on the contrary, reveal it.

Placed on an object, the talisman erases its presence. Placed on a person’s forehead, it sharpens their sight and shows them what has been hidden.

The most visible use is the clinic. The entrance to Tamayo’s practice in Asakusa is invisible to everyone, and illusory walls complete the arrangement.

He can also make himself invisible. The power has its limits, however: two demons sent by Muzan spot the house despite this camouflage and tear it to pieces.

Our article on Blood Demon Arts and how they work places this power among the others.

The power requires preparation. Each talisman is made in advance, put in place by hand, and must stay there to work, which forces Yushiro to work ahead of fights rather than in the middle of them.

Hide or show

One of Yushiro’s talismans erases an object’s presence, or reveals what has been hidden. An entire clinic disappears this way.

His role during the final battle

The power changes scale in Demon Slayer’s last arc. Yushiro makes dozens of talismans at once and hands them out to the fighters who have gone down into the Infinity Castle.

Zenitsu, Inosuke and Kanao cover themselves with them to approach Muzan unseen, even if the first demon eventually sees through this camouflage through sheer speed. Yushiro also goes after the Upper Moon who controls the castle: he blurs her vision, then fights Muzan for control of her mind.

He goes further with the crows. By placing his talismans on the messenger birds, he links the Ubuyashiki children to the fighters’ positions and lets them see what is happening in real time.

The gain is enormous for the human camp. Losses, results, the castle’s shifting structure: the leadership follows the clash from outside and gives orders accordingly.

Our articles on the Infinity Castle and how it works and on the Corps’ Kasugai crows detail this arrangement.

He takes the castle from Muzan

Yushiro fights Muzan for control of Nakime, mistress of the Infinity Castle. Muzan prefers to kill her, and the castle rises to the surface.

His medical skills

In Demon Slayer, the character is not just the bearer of a power. Trained by Tamayo for years, Yushiro handles her substances, dosages and techniques with a mastery nobody else has.

He saves two characters this way. He catches Zenitsu as he falls through the Infinity Castle, then uses several substances to stop the damage from a Blood Demon Art spreading through his body.

He also gets Tanjiro back on his feet. The boy, poisoned by Muzan’s blood, has a stopped heart when Murata brings him over. One of Tamayo’s remedies revives him, and he sets off alone again against the first demon.

The detail says something about the character. Yushiro loathes these two boys, says so, and treats them anyway.

Our article on Kaigaku, the pupil turned demon tells of the fight he pulls Zenitsu out of.

The character carries all the equipment, in fact. His white backpack holds the clinic’s substances, instruments and supplies, and he keeps it on even in the corridors of the first demon’s castle.

He treats those he loathes

Tamayo’s death

The hardest blow comes at the start of Demon Slayer’s final battle. Tamayo injects her substance into the first demon, who absorbs her straight away, and Yushiro loses the only person who mattered to him.

Yet he carries on the work. The boy stays at his post, places his talismans, treats the wounded and plays his part until daybreak.

After the victory, he is not doing well at all. Hidden in the shade, he clutches one of Tamayo’s hairpins and tells her, in tears, that the war is over. Three months later, Tanjiro, convalescing, asks him not to die, because he is the last one keeping Tamayo’s memory alive.

He keeps his word. Our article on the last fight against Muzan tells of that night, and our article on what becomes of Tanjiro at the end of that convalescence.

The same visit is unlike him. He congratulates the boy on his fight, then claims he was joking as soon as Tanjiro protests.

Do not die

Three months after the war, Tanjiro asks Yushiro not to die, so that someone keeps Tamayo’s memory alive. He keeps his word.

The present-day painter

The character’s ending is on the last page of Demon Slayer. A century after the war, Yushiro is still alive, in modern Japan, under the name Yushiro Yamamoto.

He has become a painter. His canvases depict a woman, always the same one, and there are at least eight hundred and twelve of them.

His work is recognised all over the world. So the story’s most unpleasant demon ends up a famous artist, devoting his entire career to a single model.

The detail closes his story better than any speech. He promised not to die, he kept his word, and he spends a century painting from memory someone who is no longer there.

Our page on the whole world of the series places this present-day period, and our page on all the series’ arcs places the epilogue in which he appears.

Tamayo, at night beneath the cherry blossoms, the woman Yushiro paints all his life, Demon Slayer

A century of portraits

Yushiro becomes a painter recognised all over the world. All his canvases depict Tamayo, painted from memory.

His place in the story

The character serves three functions in the story, and he fulfils all of them to the end. He brings comedy, logistics, and proof that a demon can belong to the other camp.

His existence also raises an awkward question. If Tamayo can create allied demons, the Corps could have had another weapon, and the story never goes down that path.

Finally, he remains, with his cat, the last survivor of his kind. A demon in a world that no longer has any, who ages without ageing, and who has seen almost everyone he knew die, except Kiriya Ubuyashiki, with whom he still exchanges letters.

The story does not dwell on this loneliness. It shows a gallery, canvases, and visitors who know nothing of what they are looking at.

Finally, his path answers a common objection to the series. Demons are almost all shown as beyond redemption, and two of them prove the opposite over the whole length of the story.

The last of his kind

Yushiro goes through a century knowing he is the last living demon. Nobody around him suspects a thing.
