Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, in profile in the forest, Demon Slayer

Yuichiro Tokito, Muichiro’s twin brother

In short

Yuichiro Tokito is the elder twin brother of Muichiro, the Mist Hashira, in Demon Slayer. A woodcutter in the mountains, cold and hard on the surface, he refuses to let his brother become a demon slayer and calls him useless. One summer night, a demon enters their cabin: Yuichiro loses an arm protecting Muichiro and dies at eleven. His last words reveal all the love he was hiding, and Muichiro forgets them until the Swordsmith Village.

He never held a sword, he dies before the story begins, and he only appears in someone else’s memories. Yet Yuichiro Tokito is one of the characters who move Demon Slayer readers the most. His story fits into a few chapters, but it explains everything about Muichiro: his coldness, his amnesia, his rage against demons, and the sentence that makes him a Hashira.

Here is who Yuichiro was, why he spoke so harshly to his brother, the night that separated them and what he left him. Our page on the Demon Slayer Hashira presents Muichiro among the nine, and the one on all the Demon Slayer characters places the twins within the whole.

Who is Yuichiro Tokito?

Yuichiro is the elder of the Tokito twins, born a few moments before Muichiro. The two boys look exactly alike: long black hair that turns turquoise towards the tips, large turquoise eyes, a slight build. Both wear a sleeveless yukata with a mist pattern, darker for Yuichiro. Their father is a woodcutter, and the children live with their parents in an isolated cabin deep in the woods.

Everything that sets them apart is on the inside. Muichiro inherited the gentleness of their father, who helped everyone without counting. Yuichiro, on the other hand, is wary, curt, cutting in his words. He does not believe that doing good serves any purpose, and he says so bluntly. It is the portrait of a child who understood too quickly that the world gave nothing back, and who chose to give nothing more so as to lose nothing more.

Their two given names answer each other. Yuichiro’s is written with the character 有, “to have, to exist”, and Muichiro’s with 無, “nothing, absence”. One has, the other has not: a kanji pun that Yuichiro turns against his brother, before giving him its true meaning. Our article on Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira tells the life of his younger brother.

Two given names that answer each other

In Demon Slayer, Yuichiro bears the character for existence and Muichiro that of nothingness: the two twins are written like two halves.

The year everything falls apart

The twins are ten when their mother catches a cold that turns into pneumonia. One stormy night, their father goes out to look for medicinal plants in the mountains to treat her. He falls from a cliff and does not come back. Their mother dies soon after. Within a few days, the two boys find themselves alone in the cabin.

They survive together, cutting wood like their father. But grief does not bring them closer. On the way to the cemetery, Yuichiro says that their father was stupid to die helping someone, and that kindness only gets you killed. Muichiro begs him to be quiet. Yuichiro adds that the “mu” in his given name means useless, and Muichiro goes home in tears.

These words are terrible, and they matter for what follows: for years, Muichiro will believe that his brother despised him. The truth, which the series keeps for the end, is the opposite. Our article on the brothers and sisters of Demon Slayer places the Tokito among the series’ other siblings.

Amane Ubuyashiki’s visit

The following spring, a woman of great beauty comes knocking at the cabin door. It is Amane, the wife of Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps. She tells the twins that they descend from a line of fighters from the time of the very first breathing style, and she invites them to join the Corps.

Muichiro is thrilled: becoming a demon slayer means being able to help others, as their father did. Yuichiro flatly refuses. He slams a knife on the board, reproaches his brother for his optimism, and reminds him how many times he had begged their father to stay safe and their mother to rest. Helping others, he says, is for the chosen few; they will die for nothing if they try. He suspects Amane of wanting to use them.

Amane comes back several times, and Yuichiro drives her away at every visit. The last time, he throws water in her face, and she does not come back. Our article on the Ubuyashiki family presents Amane and her children.

An anger that protects

Yuichiro does not despise his brother: in Demon Slayer, each of his harsh sentences tries to keep him from dying like their parents.

The night of the demon

Summer arrives, hot and heavy. The twins barely speak to each other anymore. On a hot night when they cannot sleep, a demon enters the cabin. It throws itself at Muichiro. Yuichiro steps in between and loses his left arm to the blow.

The demon mocks them: in any case, it says, their lives are worthless. These words unleash in Muichiro a rage he had never known. With everything that comes to hand, tools and logs, he strikes the demon without stopping, until dawn. At sunrise, the demon crumbles into ashes.

Muichiro drags himself back to the cabin. Yuichiro is lying down, dying. He prays to the gods and to the Buddha to spare at least his little brother. He says that Muichiro is not like him, that he has a good heart, that he wanted to help others and that it was he who stopped him. If someone must be punished, let it be him.

Then he finally gives the true meaning of his brother’s given name. The “mu” in Muichiro is not that of uselessness, it is that of “mugen”, infinity: for others, Muichiro can draw on limitless strength. Yuichiro dies at eleven, his brother’s hand in his.

The true meaning of the given name

The “mu” in Muichiro means infinity, not uselessness: in Demon Slayer, it is Yuichiro’s last sentence that will make his brother a Hashira.

A brother forgotten, then found again

A few days later, Amane comes back with two of her daughters. She finds Muichiro alive, barely, next to his brother’s body. The boy survives, but the shock has erased everything: he no longer remembers anything, neither Yuichiro, nor their parents, nor that night. All he has left is a dull rage against demons.

Muichiro trains with a speed that astounds the Corps. Two months after holding a sword for the first time, he is the Mist Hashira, at fourteen. But his character has changed. He has become cold, distant, direct to the point of rudeness, forgetful of everything that does not matter for the mission. Without knowing it, he has become Yuichiro. Our article on Mist Breathing and its seven forms presents the style he created.

Feature Yuichiro Muichiro
Birth order the elder the younger
Character of the given name 有, to have, to exist 無, nothing, infinity
Temperament harsh, wary, protective gentle, then cold after the amnesia
The night of the demon loses an arm, dies at eleven kills the demon at dawn
Japanese voice Kengo Kawanishi Kengo Kawanishi

The two twins even share the same voice actor in Japan, Kengo Kawanishi, who gives them two barely different tones.

Our Muichiro pop figure, in a low stance, sword held with both hands and a swirl of mist curling behind him, keeps the Hashira as he became. It is in the Muichiro Tokito collection.

The Swordsmith Village, the memory returns

In the Swordsmith Village, Muichiro faces Gyokko, Upper Moon Five. He is trapped in a jar of water, on the verge of drowning. At that moment, the memories come back all at once: the cabin, the storm, the harsh words, the night of the demon, and his brother’s last sentence. He understands that Yuichiro never despised him.

Freed from his amnesia, Muichiro awakens his mark, breaks the jar and kills Gyokko. He also recovers his former gentleness: he smiles again, thanks Tanjiro, takes care of Kotetsu, the young swordsmith he had first ignored. He will later say he is happy to have resembled his brother during those years, as if Yuichiro had kept watching over him. The demon slayers around him notice the change without understanding: the absent-minded, icy Hashira has started looking at people. Our article on Gyokko, Upper Moon Five tells of this fight, and the one on the Swordsmith Village arc places it in the story.

A lineage that goes back to Kokushibo

What Amane had told the twins was true, and heavier than she let on. The Tokito descend from Michikatsu Tsugikuni, Yoriichi’s twin brother, who became the demon Kokushibo, Upper Moon One. Two twins, four centuries later, in the same lineage: the series makes the two stories rhyme.

In the Infinity Castle, Muichiro faces Kokushibo, who recognises his own blood in him. The fourteen-year-old boy loses an arm too, and immobilises the demon long enough for Gyomei and Sanemi to finish him off. He dies in this fight. Our article on Kokushibo, Upper Moon One tells the ancestor’s story, and our page on the Demon Slayer demons presents all the Moons.

Our Muichiro katana, a 104 cm replica with a golden labyrinth guard, takes up the Hashira’s blade in the Demon Slayer katana collection.

The reunion

After his death, Muichiro finds his brother again in the afterlife. Yuichiro does not welcome him with joy: he cries, he shouts, he orders him to go back. He reproaches him for dying so young, for putting his life at stake, for not having lived. It is the same anger as in the cabin, and this time Muichiro understands it.

Muichiro replies that he regrets nothing. He knew he was going to die, he protected others, and he is happy to have lived that way. The two brothers cry together. For many readers, it is the most heartbreaking scene of the final battle. Our article on the Hashira who die in Demon Slayer tells the fate of the nine, and our page on all the Demon Slayer arcs places the Infinity Castle within the whole.

A character who moves readers

Yuichiro takes up barely a few chapters of Demon Slayer, and he has no fight, no technique, no heroic line. Yet he moves readers more than many characters present from beginning to end, because he resembles someone everyone knows: the gruff big brother, the worried parent, the friend who criticises so as not to admit he is afraid.

His harshness has a simple reason. He saw his father die trying to help, his mother die for lack of care, and he decided this would not happen to his brother. Every hurtful sentence is a barrier raised between Muichiro and the world. The series says it plainly at the end: his anger was his way of loving.

He is also a character who sheds light on the whole series. Demon Slayer is full of brothers and sisters who protect each other at the cost of their lives: Tanjiro and Nezuko, Sanemi and Genya, Gyutaro and Daki. The Tokito are the shortest and clearest version of it, and the closest to that of Kokushibo and Yoriichi, to whom the series links them by blood. In the Demon Slayer pop figure collection, Muichiro comes in two versions, face clean or marked with red, as before and after the fight in the Castle.

Anger as love

Yuichiro hurts in order to protect: in Demon Slayer, he is the big brother who hides his tenderness behind harsh words, until his last sentence.
