Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, head bowed, lit by the rising sun at the end of the Mugen Train, Demon Slayer

The most powerful Demon Slayer quotes

In short

Demon Slayer is full of lines that have become iconic. Giyu orders Tanjiro never to let anyone decide his fate, Urokodaki slaps him for hesitating, Rengoku asks him to set his heart ablaze, Tanjiro grits his teeth because he is the eldest. Zenitsu screams his fear, Inosuke charges like a boar, Kagaya sets the eternity of human feelings against Muzan. Here are the most powerful quotes of the series, put back in their scene.

Some Demon Slayer lines are known by people who have never seen the series. They have spread on social media, in school playgrounds, on t-shirts, and they have become references in Japan as in France. This success comes down to one simple thing: each of these lines arrives at the right moment, in a scene where the character has nothing left but their words.

Here are the Demon Slayer quotes you need to know, character by character, with the scene that gives them their strength. The lines are quoted for their meaning, the way they are remembered. Our page on all the Demon Slayer characters presents those who speak them, and our page on all the Demon Slayer arcs places each scene in the story.

The iconic lines at a glance

The table brings together the most famous lines of the series, with who says them and the scene where they land. Most belong to the early arcs, the ones everyone has seen.

“Don’t let anyone decide your fate!” Giyu Tomioka the snow of the first episode
“Your judgement is too slow!” Sakonji Urokodaki the first meeting with Tanjiro
“I’m the eldest, so I can endure it.” Tanjiro Kamado the fight against Kyogai
“Set your heart ablaze.” Kyojuro Rengoku the end of the Mugen Train

“I am not hated.” Giyu Tomioka Mount Natagumo, facing Shinobu

The right word at the right moment

Demon Slayer quotes became iconic because they always land in a scene where the character has nothing left but their words.

Giyu: “Don’t let anyone decide your fate!”

The very first great line of Demon Slayer comes in the first episode. Tanjiro has just found his family slaughtered and his sister turned into a demon. Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, is about to kill Nezuko. Tanjiro throws himself to his knees and begs him to spare her. Tomioka, furious, shouts at him never to give anyone else the power of life or death over what he holds dear, and not to settle for crying.

The line is harsh, almost cruel, but it is a gift. Giyu sees in this boy someone who can fight, and he wants to wake him up. It is this line that sets off the whole story: Tanjiro gets back up, uses a trick to save his sister, and Giyu, impressed, sends him to his old master. In Japan as in France, this line has become one of the most quoted of the whole series.

Tomioka’s second famous line is much lighter. On Mount Natagumo, Shinobu remarks, with her usual smile, that this is why everyone hates him. He replies, genuinely offended, that he is not hated. Our article on Giyu and Shinobu tells this scene, and our five-panel canvas shows Giyu Tomioka in front of a water dragon, in the Giyu Tomioka collection.

Urokodaki: “Your judgement is too slow!”

Sakonji Urokodaki, the former Water Hashira, greets Tanjiro with a question: what would he do if his sister devoured someone? Tanjiro hesitates, searches for words. Urokodaki slaps him at once and shouts that his judgement is too slow. In a fight against a demon, a second of hesitation costs a life, and the old man wants his future pupil to understand that before he even starts.

The slap and the line have spread widely on the internet in Japan, where people bring it out to tease someone who hesitates too long over a menu or a decision. Behind the humour, the line sums up the master’s philosophy: a demon slayer does not think while fighting, he acts, and training teaches him to act right. Our article on Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro’s master tells the rest of this training.

A slap that became a joke

“Your judgement is too slow”: Urokodaki’s slap has become a joke in Japan to tease someone who hesitates.

Tanjiro: “I’m the eldest, so I can endure it”

In the Tsuzumi Mansion, Tanjiro faces Kyogai with an injured leg that hurts terribly. To give himself courage, he keeps telling himself that he is the eldest, and that an eldest son endures pain. Then he adds, with disarming honesty, that if he had been the younger son, he could not have taken it. Japanese fans adopted it to joke about the role of eldest children in families, and the line became one of the most shared of the first season. The line makes you smile, then it moves you: it is the whole character, a big brother who stays on his feet for others.

Tanjiro has other powerful lines, more serious ones. Faced with dying demons, he repeats that they were once human, and that their bodies must not be trampled. Facing Rui, he shouts at him that his family bonds are fake, made of fear and not of love. Our article on what makes Tanjiro so endearing looks back at this kindness, and the one on Kyogai, the drum demon tells the fight in the Tsuzumi Mansion.

Rengoku: “Set your heart ablaze”

The best-loved line in Demon Slayer belongs to Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. On the morning of the Mugen Train, after holding off Akaza all night, he is mortally wounded. He speaks to Tanjiro, who is weeping, one last time. He asks him to set his heart ablaze, to grit his teeth and keep moving forward, even when he feels weak and miserable. Then he tells him he trusts him for what comes next.

This line, also translated as “let your heart burn”, has become the motto of Rengoku’s fans. It weighed heavily in the triumph of the Mugen Train film, the biggest success in the history of Japanese cinema for years. Rengoku also has a lighter line that fans adore: on the train, he eats a pile of bento boxes, shouting “delicious!” at every bite. Our article on Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira tells his last night, and the one on the Mugen Train arc places it in the story.

Our t-shirt with a Rengoku silhouette made of flames across the back, in six colours from child to adult sizes, carries this legacy well. It is in the Kyojuro Rengoku collection.

The fans’ motto

“Set your heart ablaze”: Rengoku’s last words to Tanjiro have become the best-loved line in all of Demon Slayer.

Zenitsu and Inosuke, fear and the charge

Zenitsu Agatsuma is behind the loudest lines in the series. He screams that he is going to die, that he does not want to go, that he is too weak, and he screams it on every mission. But his most important line comes from his master, Jigoro Kuwajima: if you can only do one thing, hone it to the extreme. Zenitsu masters only one move of Thunder Breathing, and he has worked on it until it became an unstoppable weapon.

Inosuke Hashibira has his war cry: he throws himself at the enemy shouting “boar charge!”, a Japanese expression for someone who charges head down without thinking. He also proclaims himself king of the mountain and challenges everything that moves, including a train he takes for a monster. Our article on the Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke trio tells these three personalities, and our Zenitsu plush, looking worried with his mouth open in a scream, is made for him.

Shinobu, Tengen and Gyomei

The other Hashira each have their signature line. Shinobu Kocho greets demons with disconcerting politeness: on Mount Natagumo, she offers a spider demon to be friends, with a big smile, before injecting her with her poison. The scene says everything about the character, a surface gentleness hiding immense anger at those who killed her sister. Our article on Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira tells what lies behind this smile.

Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, has a pet word he repeats constantly: everything must be flamboyant, spectacular, dazzling. He uses it for his fights, his outfits, his wives and even for death, which he wants to be flamboyant too. Gyomei Himejima, for his part, prays aloud, a Buddhist prayer on his lips and his eyes full of tears, even in the middle of fights: the strongest of the Hashira is also the most easily moved. The Tengen Uzui collection gathers the products of the most flamboyant of the nine.

The demons: Akaza, Muzan and the others

The demons have their lines, and they say everything about their view of the world. Akaza, facing Rengoku, keeps offering to make him a demon: he admires his strength and cannot bear the idea of it fading with age. He repeats it like an obsession, until morning. Rengoku refuses every time, and that refusal makes him a hero. Our article on Akaza, Upper Moon Three tells the story of this demon who despises the weak.

Muzan Kibutsuji, for his part, has a line that chills from his very first appearance. In Asakusa, a man he has just hurt tells him he looks pale. Muzan, who has spent a thousand years running from death, cannot stand this remark: he asks whether his face looks pale, whether he looks like a man about to die, and he turns the man into a demon to punish him. All his fear of death is in this scene. Our page on Muzan and the demon Moons presents his hierarchy.

Kagaya: “Human will is eternal”

The deepest line in the series belongs to Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the head of the Corps. Muzan finally comes to kill him, in his mansion. Kagaya, dying, receives him calmly and explains why he will never win: a demon lives only for himself, whereas human will is passed down from one generation to the next and never dies. Then he blows up the mansion, with himself, his wife and two of his daughters inside, to trap Muzan.

This line is the key to the whole series, and it takes on its full meaning in the last chapter. Tanjiro carries his father’s dance, Kanao Shinobu’s cure, the Hashira the lessons of those who died before them. Muzan, immortal, loses to humans who die but pass the torch. Our article on Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the head of the Corps tells that night.

The key to the series

Kagaya tells Muzan that human will is eternal: it is the line that explains how mortal humans defeat a thousand-year-old demon.

Wearing a quote

Demon Slayer quotes have become a design in their own right. A Rengoku line on a t-shirt, a Japanese character on the back of a sweatshirt, a name in kanji on a cover: it is a way of showing your favourite character through their words rather than their face. As a gift, a line the person loves says a lot in little space, and it lasts much longer than a trend.

To choose, think of the scene that struck the person most. A Rengoku fan will recognise his blazing heart at first glance, a Tomioka fan will smile at a nod to Natagumo. Our article on the Demon Slayer t-shirt guide helps you choose a cut and a size, and the Demon Slayer t-shirt collection gathers all the designs.

Key points

  1. Giyu sets off the story by ordering Tanjiro never to let anyone decide his fate.
  2. Urokodaki slaps Tanjiro for judging too slowly, a scene that became a meme in Japan.
  3. “Set your heart ablaze”, Rengoku’s last words, is the best-loved line.
  4. Kagaya sets the eternity of human will against Muzan, the key to the whole series.
