In short
Tengen Uzui is the Sound Hashira of Demon Slayer, a 198-centimetre former shinobi who fights with two Nichirin cleavers linked by a chain. He takes Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke into the Entertainment District to find his three missing wives, and faces Daki and Gyutaro, Upper Moon Six, there. He survives the fight but loses an eye and his left hand, which ends his career.
Contents
He presents himself as the god of flamboyance, talks about his fights in terms of musical scores and has three women in tow. Yet under the make-up and the jewels, Tengen Uzui is the most pragmatic Hashira in Demon Slayer, and the one who saw the most people die before even joining the Corps.
This portrait traces his shinobi past, his rhythm-based fighting style, the Entertainment District arc and his retirement, among the nine Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps.

In Demon Slayer, Tengen is the second tallest of the nine Hashira, behind Gyomei Himejima: 198 centimetres and 95 kilos, a white headband on his forehead, red make-up around his eyes, gemstones in his hair. He carries two cleaver-shaped Nichirin swords, linked by a chain, which he spins around him.
His vocabulary revolves around spectacle, to the point that he stands out in the world of Demon Slayer. Everything is flamboyant, everything must be flamboyant, and he announces his actions like a master of ceremonies. In front of the trio, he proclaims himself the god of festivals and demands to be obeyed as such.
Behind this persona hides a man who understood very early what a life is worth. He refuses pointless sacrifices, coldly calculates every engagement and pulls his people out as soon as a mission is lost. He is the only Hashira who orders a retreat.
This gap between appearance and substance is intended by the author: the more Tengen shows off, the less anyone suspects him of calculating. His opponents always notice too late, when the measure of the fight has already slipped away from them.
This sleeveless uniform, cut to leave the arms free, is the basis of his outfit among the cosplays of the nine Hashira. You will find everything the shop offers in his name in the collection devoted to Tengen Uzui.

Tengen’s past is the darkest of all the Hashira in Demon Slayer. He is born into a dying ninja clan, led by a father obsessed with the survival of the bloodline. Nine children, three of whom die during training pushed too far. The other six are then pitted against one another, masked, in fights to the death.
Three more die. Only Tengen and a younger brother remain, and the brother fully embraces the father’s logic: people are tools, and tools can be replaced. Tengen realises he will become the same if he stays, takes his three wives and leaves the clan, which among shinobi means a death sentence.
He joins the Demon Slayer Corps with a rule he never lets go of: his companions’ lives come before the mission. This rule sets him apart from all the others, and our article on the conditions for becoming a Hashira explains what is unusual about his path.
Makio
The most direct of the three, impulsive and frank, infiltrated into the Ogimoto house in the district.
Suma
The most emotional, who cries easily and whom Tengen protects most often.
Hinatsuru
The most composed, infiltrated into the Kyogoku house, who understands before anyone else that the star courtesan is a demon.
Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru, his three wives
Tengen’s three-way marriage surprises Western readers. It comes from the tradition of his clan, which married its members between shinobi families to secure descendants, and the three women were chosen by his father rather than by him.
What he makes of it is the opposite. Tengen gives them a single, repeated order: their lives come before his, and before the mission. When he sends them undercover, he sets a deadline, and beyond the deadline he comes to get them, even if it means abandoning the investigation.
The three are trained kunoichi, not extras. Hinatsuru unmasks the demon from the inside and, during the fight, throws a volley of kunai coated in wisteria poison, while Makio and Suma evacuate the district’s residents. Without them, the demon duo would never have been located.
Their lives before the mission
The rule Tengen repeats to his three wives fits in one sentence: if it comes to a choice, they come before him and before the objective.
Sound Breathing and reading by rhythm
In Demon Slayer, Sound Breathing derives from Thunder Breathing, one of the five original breathing styles detailed on our page of every breathing style in Demon Slayer. Tengen adds his two shinobi specialities to it, explosives and reading sound.
| Form | English name | What the technique does |
|---|---|---|
| First | Roar | a crossed strike of the two cleavers, doubled by an explosion |
| Fourth | Constant Resounding Slashes | a fast sequence that covers every angle |
| Fifth | String Performance | a full rotation of the chain-linked blades |
Yet his most feared technique is not a form. Tengen listens to the sounds of the fight, breathing, footsteps, heartbeats, and draws a score from them: he translates the opponent’s movements into rhythm, then attacks on the off-beat. Once the score is found, he anticipates every blow.
His weapons are unique in the Corps. With Inosuke, he is one of the only two known demon slayers to fight with two blades, and the only one to link them with a chain. The other forms used among the nine are compared in our article on the Hashira’s weapons, and how the blades are made on our page about Nichirin swords and their colours.
The score
Tengen translates the fight into rhythm: breathing, footsteps, heartbeats. Once he finds the measure, he strikes on the beat where the opponent cannot react.
You will find these cleavers as replicas, a blade with a chain at the pommel in the katana section, and in LEGO with the two twin blades to build, found among the other LEGO models.

The most colourful arc of Demon Slayer begins with a disappearance. Tengen sends his three wives to investigate in the Yoshiwara Entertainment District, where women have been disappearing for years. All three stop giving any sign of life. He sets off to find them and takes Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke, disguised as young girls, into three different houses.
Three houses, three investigations
Zenitsu disappears in turn in the Kyogoku house, Inosuke discovers beneath the district the cavern where the demon keeps her prisoners, including Makio and Suma, and Tanjiro comes across Daki, the star courtesan, before realising she is the demon. The arc is one of the densest in the series, and its place in the story is detailed on our page of every arc of Demon Slayer.
Daki and Gyutaro, one demon for two bodies
Daki turns out to be only one half. Her brother Gyutaro emerges from her back, and together they form Upper Moon Six: both necks must be cut at the same time to kill them. Their rank and their story are told on our page about the demons and the demon Moons.
The fight lasts an entire night. Gyutaro poisons Tengen with his sickles; the Hashira loses an eye, then his left hand. He holds on regardless, finds the score again and allows Tanjiro and Inosuke to land the two simultaneous blows that put an end to the duo.
One night, one Upper Moon
It is the first Upper Moon killed by the demon slayers in more than a century. At the news, Muzan summons the other five to the Infinity Castle.
What Tengen leaves the trio
His time with Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke lasts a single arc, and it changes them more lastingly than any training.
Above all, Tengen leaves them a sentence he repeats throughout the arc: no one should die for a mission. After the Mugen Train, where the trio saw a Hashira fall, this instruction sets things straight. The rest of their progress is told on our page of every arc of the story.
Three blades at once
Upper Moon Six only falls to a simultaneous blow on two necks. It is the trio’s first collective victory, and the lesson Tengen leaves them.
The Sound Hashira’s retirement
This section reveals the end of the Entertainment District arc.
Few Hashira in Demon Slayer leave their post alive. One eye fewer, one hand fewer, Gyutaro’s poison still in his body: Tengen leaves the service. He announces his decision without drama, explains that a diminished Hashira puts his people in danger, and hands over.
It is one of only two retirements through disability in the entire work, the other being that of the former Thunder Hashira. All the others die in office or reach the end of the story, as our article on the Hashira who die in Demon Slayer details.
His retirement is not a complete withdrawal. During the Hashira Training, he opens the first station, basic stamina, and he returns to headquarters during the final battle to protect the heir of the Ubuyashiki family, alongside Shinjuro Rengoku. His training programme is described in our article on the Hashira Training.
Retired, not gone
Tengen and the former Thunder Hashira are the only two to leave their post through injury. The others stay to the end, one way or another.

Trivia about Tengen Uzui
He gives himself the title of god of festivals, matsuri no kami in Japanese. Inosuke immediately replies that he, for his part, is the king of the mountain.
His initial design showed him slimmer, with half his face covered in bandages.
With Inosuke, he is one of the only two known demon slayers to fight with two blades.
His shinobi past is only revealed during his fight, by Gyutaro.
He came thirty-seventh in the first Kimetsu no Yaiba popularity poll with 14 votes, then thirteenth in the second with 3,436 votes, after his arc was adapted.
In the school version Kimetsu Academy, he teaches art and tells his students that art is an explosion.
Born on October 31, he shares his birthday with Halloween, which earns him a few seasonal illustrations in costume.
From 37th to 13th place
14 votes in the first poll, 3,436 in the second. No Demon Slayer character climbs as many places between two polls, a direct effect of his arc being adapted.
