In short
The Hand Demon is Tanjiro’s first serious opponent in Demon Slayer, locked up on Mount Fujikasane by Sakonji Urokodaki for forty-seven years. He has devoured fifty Final Selection candidates, including Sabito and Makomo, and he kills his jailer’s students out of revenge. Tanjiro is the fourteenth he comes across. Beheaded with Water Breathing, he dies asking for someone to hold his hand.

He asks Tanjiro what year of the Meiji era it is. The boy replies that the Taishō era has begun. The demon howls that the era has changed yet again without him leaving this mountain, and this rage tells you everything you need to know about him.
In Demon Slayer, the Hand Demon is Tanjiro’s first real obstacle, and the first demon the story gives a reason to exist. This article tells of his transformation, his imprisonment, the fifty candidates he devoured, the deaths of Sabito and Makomo, and the way he fades away, long before the story brings together the Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps. The camp he comes from is presented on our page about the demons of Demon Slayer and the demon Moons.

His silhouette is one of the most striking in all of Demon Slayer. A huge, veined body with olive-green skin, which has lost all human appearance and moves on all fours like an animal.
The arms are his signature. He has so many that he has had to give up his clothes and use them to cover his body, and he stretches them several metres to grab whatever passes.
This appearance is not his original one. The demon had a humanoid form until his fiftieth meal, then a mutation turned him into this mass of hands, which the story presents as a direct consequence of the number of his victims.
The story insists on his size. The demon is far bigger than an adult man, fills the space between the trees, and his bulk is such that an ordinary candidate can do nothing but run.
His wide mouth, filled with irregular teeth, completes the picture. Nothing in this body recalls the man he was, except for one reflex he keeps until the very last second.
Fifty meals, one mutation
The Hand Demon had a humanoid appearance until his fiftieth candidate. His current body is the result of those fifty meals.
The man he once was
Demon Slayer gives him neither a name nor a face, but he keeps one detail from his human life. As a child, he would ask his older brother to hold his hand, and his brother called him a coward for it.
His transformation takes place during the Keiō era, at the very end of the Edo period. Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon, changes him, and the hunger comes at once.
His first victim is that older brother. The Demon Slayer story mentions it without dwelling on it, but this detail matters: the demon began by devouring the only person who looked after him.
This childhood detail explains his whole ending. The demon kept only one reflex from his human life, and it is the one that will earn him his opponent’s final gesture.
His capture follows soon after. Sakonji Urokodaki, then the Water Hashira, defeats him without killing him and locks him up on Mount Fujikasane, so that he serves as an obstacle for the Final Selection candidates.
The habit
He would ask his brother to hold his hand, and was taken for a coward.
The first victim
That same older brother, devoured just after his transformation.
The capture
Sakonji Urokodaki defeats him and locks him up on the wisteria mountain.
Forty-seven years on Mount Fujikasane
In Demon Slayer, the mountain is covered in wisteria, the only plant demons cannot cross. The Hand Demon is therefore locked up there without bars, in a space he knows every metre of.
He counts the years. He asks his victims what year it is, follows the passing of the eras, and flies into a rage when he learns that the era has changed once again during his captivity.
His hatred has a single target. He curses Sakonji Urokodaki for taking away his freedom, and this resentment keeps him going for forty-seven years, which is rare for a Demon Slayer demon without a rank.
The way he keeps count says a lot about his state. He demands neither freedom nor food, he wants to know how much time has passed, as if time itself were the punishment.
His plan for revenge is simple. Since he cannot reach the Hashira, he kills all of his students, and he recognises them by the fox mask they wear.
A prison of wisteria
The Final Selection mountain is covered in wisteria, which demons cannot pass through. No chains are needed.
The Final Selection and its role
The Final Selection is the trial that ends a Demon Slayer swordsman’s training. Candidates spend seven nights on the mountain, among captured and starving demons, and those who survive join the Corps.
The demons locked up there are deliberately weak. Deprived of regular meals and unable to leave, they serve to measure the candidates’ level without pitting them against a demon Moon.
The principle assumes that the imprisoned demons do not grow. Yet this one received fifty meals in forty-seven years, delivered every year by the Corps itself, without anyone doing the maths.
The Hand Demon is the exception. He ate fifty people on the spot, which made him far more powerful than anything the trial anticipated, and no one knew for decades.
Our article on the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps details how this trial unfolds and the place it holds in the training.
An opponent off the scale
The Final Selection demons are chosen for their weakness. This one had eaten fifty candidates, which put him far above the intended trial.
Sabito and Makomo
Two Demon Slayer faces come back in the demon’s mouth. A boy with pink hair and a scar at the corner of his mouth, and a girl in flower-patterned clothes, with quick, light movements.
They are Sabito and Makomo, two of Sakonji Urokodaki’s students who each died during their own Final Selection, years before Tanjiro’s. The demon killed and devoured them like the others.
And yet Tanjiro has met them. During his training, the two taught him to split a boulder and corrected his stance, without him understanding who they were, as told in our article on Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro’s master.
For Tanjiro, the revelation is twofold. He learns that his two teachers were dead before they met, and that the one speaking to him is responsible for their end.
The demon recounts their deaths with pleasure, describing how Makomo lost her nerve when he told her what the masks were for. It is this account that makes Tanjiro lose his calm, until then focused on survival.
Fourteen students
Tanjiro is the fourteenth of Urokodaki’s students this demon encounters. He had killed and eaten the previous thirteen.
You will find the two students on a single portrait, fox masks pushed up, in the collection devoted to Sabito.

The two dead students come back during Tanjiro’s training, on Mount Sagiri, without the boy understanding what they are. Sabito corrects him with the sword, Makomo explains his mistakes in posture.
Their teaching focuses on one specific point. Tanjiro could not split the boulder that marked the end of his apprenticeship, and it is thanks to them that he manages it after a year.
The two disappear on the day of this success. Tanjiro thinks he is splitting Sabito’s mask, and it is the boulder he finds cut in two beneath his blade. The Demon Slayer story never settles what exactly they were.
The fight against the Hand Demon gives the indirect answer. They had died years earlier on this mountain, and they came back to train the one who would avenge all of the master’s students.
A year to split a boulder
Tanjiro takes a year to cut Urokodaki’s boulder, with the help of two dead students. Without them, he would never have reached the Final Selection.
You will find the sword of the one who corrects him as a replica, among the katana replicas, and his face in the enamel head ring series.

In Demon Slayer, each of Urokodaki’s students receives a fox mask carved by the master, bearing a design unique to its wearer. Over the years, the Hand Demon has learned to recognise them.
He calls Tanjiro a pretty fox, exactly as he must have called the previous thirteen. The mask, meant to protect, thus marks the target for the one demon they should hide from.
This irony is intended by the author. The old Hashira locked this demon up to protect the candidates, and that decision condemned his own students for forty-seven years.
Urokodaki only sees that his students do not come back, and our article on Shinjuro Rengoku and the former Hashira shows how retired masters carry this kind of weight.
A mask that marks the target
The fox mask carved by Urokodaki was meant to protect his students. For this demon, it is how he recognises them.
This white mask with red markings has stayed with the hero, and a piece in the collection devoted to Tanjiro Kamado wears it pushed up on his forehead.

The first real fight of Demon Slayer begins with a rescue. Tanjiro comes across the demon while helping another candidate, whose leg is already caught. He cuts off the demon’s limb with Water Breathing’s Second Form, Water Wheel, and immediately draws his attention.
The fight goes badly for him. An arm gets past his guard, strikes him in the face and knocks him out for a moment, then an attack from the ground narrowly misses him.
The demon uses his arms as so many independent weapons. He sends several at once, from the ground, from the sides, from above, and each severed limb grows back within moments.
Tanjiro regains the upper hand by cutting the arms off one by one. The demon ends up without enough of them, and chooses to concentrate his defence around his neck, which he hardens as much as he can.
Water Breathing’s First Form cuts through all the same. Our page on every breathing style in the series details this style, and our article on the ways to kill a demon explains why only the neck counts.
At the moment of impact, the demon thinks he sees Urokodaki again in the boy’s silhouette. The movement is the master’s from forty-seven years earlier, and he screams his jailer’s name as he realises he is going to die.
The same movement, forty-seven years later
The demon thinks he sees Urokodaki again in the boy beheading him. The master’s Water Breathing has passed to his student.
The outstretched hand
The end of the scene is one of the most discussed in Demon Slayer. The beheaded demon panics, too frightened to close his eyes, and expects to see contempt on the face of the one who killed him.
The story chooses not to make him disappear all at once. A whole page passes over this severed face trying to understand what it reads in the boy’s eyes.
He finds something else. Tanjiro looks at him with sadness, which takes him completely by surprise, and the demon then rediscovers the reflex from his childhood.
He holds out a hand towards the boy and asks for it to be held. Tanjiro does so, and the demon weeps with gratitude as he disappears.
This scene establishes the hero’s main trait for the whole story. He kills without hesitation and still accompanies his opponents in death, as detailed on our page about the hero of Demon Slayer and his character.
A coward to the very end
As a child, he asked for his brother’s hand. A demon for fifty years, he asks for his opponent’s, and gets it.
What this fight establishes in the story
The Hand Demon sets several rules that Demon Slayer will follow afterwards. A demon is killed through the neck, with a Nichirin blade, and each one keeps a fragment of their human past.
He also sets the measure of the hero. Tanjiro comes out of this trial with a victory won through technique rather than strength, and our page of every arc of the story places this passage in the very first chapters.
The story also owes part of its tone to him. Almost all the demons who follow die reliving their former lives, from Akaza to Rui, as our articles on Akaza’s human past and on Rui and his spider family show.
Demons without rank like him remain numerous in the story, and our article on demons’ Blood Demon Arts explains why most of them never develop one.
