Tanjiro Kamado, from behind, facing Sakonji Urokodaki and his red tengu mask, Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer mask: fox, boar or hyottoko?

In short

The section offers the most famous masks of Demon Slayer. Fox masks, the ones Urokodaki carves for his pupils: three painted models at €17.90 and eight light-up models at €44.90, edged with a wire that lights up in three modes. Inosuke’s boar heads, from the faux fur hood to the full mask, from €44.90 to €64.90. The hyottoko mask of the swordsmith Haganezuka, 26 cm high, at €64.90. And Obanai’s pleated mouth mask, at €49.90. Here is which one to choose and how to wear it.

Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro’s master, his red tengu mask and white hood, at night in the forest, Demon Slayer

In Demon Slayer, almost every mask has a story. Tanjiro’s master hides his face under a red tengu, his pupils wear foxes meant to protect them, the swordsmiths conceal themselves behind comic faces, and Inosuke never takes off his boar’s head. Wearing one of these masks means taking a piece of that story: at a convention, a costume party or for Halloween, it is often enough to make the character recognisable.

This guide helps you choose among the masks in the section: the painted or light-up fox, the boar’s head, the hyottoko, Obanai’s mask, comfort, matching cosplays and care. To put together a complete outfit, our guide to choosing your Demon Slayer cosplay presents the whole section, and all our buying advice is on the shop’s guides and advice page.

Which Demon Slayer mask to choose?

The choice depends first on the character, then on the use. A painted fox mask, light and inexpensive, is worn pushed up on the side of the head, like Tanjiro during the Final Selection, or over the face for a photo. A light-up mask makes its effect at night, in a Halloween parade or a convention hall plunged into half-light. A boar’s head instantly turns its wearer into Inosuke, but it is heavier and warmer.

The hyottoko mask and Obanai’s mouth mask are aimed at fans who know the series in detail: these are less obvious characters, whom connoisseurs will be delighted to recognise. The table sums up the section’s offer.

Mask Character Models Price
Painted fox mask Tanjiro, Makomo and a third pupil 3 17,90 €
Light-up fox mask Tanjiro, Makomo, Sabito and other colours 8 44,90 €
Boar’s head Inosuke 5 formats €44.90 to €69.90
Hyottoko mask Haganezuka and the swordsmiths 1 64,90 €
Mouth mask Obanai 1 49,90 €

The masks are in our Demon Slayer cosplay section, and the demon slayers’ ones in our demon slayer cosplay collection.

One mask, one character

A fox for Urokodaki’s pupils, a boar for Inosuke, a hyottoko for the swordsmiths: the mask is enough to say who you are.

The fox mask, a lucky charm

Sakonji Urokodaki, the former Water Hashira who trains Tanjiro on Mount Sagiri, himself wears a red tengu mask, and never takes it off in front of his pupils. For each of them, he carves a fox mask meant to protect them from misfortune. It is the only mask he makes, because he loves foxes. Tanjiro receives his after splitting the boulder that marks the end of his training, and wears it on the side of his head during the seven nights of the Final Selection.

Sabito, Urokodaki’s former pupil, his fox mask over his face, sword in hand, Demon Slayer

This lucky charm hides a tragic story, however. On Mount Fujikasane, where the Selection takes place, a demon once captured by Urokodaki recognises his pupils by their fox masks, and has killed thirteen of them, including Sabito and Makomo. Tanjiro, guided by their spirits during his training, ends up defeating this demon. Wearing a fox mask is a tribute to these lost pupils.

Each mask is different, which is what lets fans recognise each pupil. Tanjiro’s bears a red fan on the temple, Makomo’s blue flowers on the cheek, and Sabito’s his own markings, which the most attentive fans can tell apart at first glance. Choosing yours therefore means choosing the pupil you want to resemble, and the fox almost becomes a name. In the series, Tanjiro still wears it long after the Selection, hooked on his belt or pushed up on his head.

Our article on Sabito and Makomo, the lost pupils tells their story, and the one on Sakonji Urokodaki, the master with the tengu mask presents the man who carved all these masks.

The painted fox masks

Three painted plastic fox masks cost €17.90 each, in one size. The first takes up Tanjiro’s mask: a white shell, red ears, and a red fan motif edged with square teeth on the right temple, spilling over onto the ear. The eyes are cut in an almond shape and ringed with black, the muzzle is black, and the mouth extends into two lines ending in red spots.

The second takes up Makomo’s mask: a glossy white shell, ears yellow on the inside, eyes drawn with a black line rising towards the temples, a red muzzle, three black whiskers on each side, and a blue five-petal flower on the left cheek, with a second, smaller one below. The third, with a brown flame-shaped marking, completes the trio of pupils.

These masks are light, in rigid plastic, and are held by an elastic band behind the head. Their shell reproduces the features of the fox from Japanese festivals, the masks people buy at summer festival stalls. They can be worn comfortably for a whole evening, pushed up or down, and slip into a bag without taking up space. For a group, give one to each person: at this price, everyone can have their own.

At this price, the painted mask is the ideal accessory to complete a Tanjiro, Makomo or Sabito cosplay, or to dress up a child for a party. It is worn pushed up on the head most of the time, as in the series, which leaves the face free. Our Sabito Demon Slayer collection gathers the items of the masked pupil.

The light-up fox masks

Eight light-up fox masks cost €44.90 each. Their outline is edged with a wire that lights up, with three lighting modes. By day, they are white masks painted in the character’s colours. At night, the wire draws a glowing outline around the face, and the eyes stay clear in the middle: a striking effect in a Halloween parade or a dark convention hall.

Makomo, Urokodaki’s pupil, her flowered fox mask pushed up on her head, Demon Slayer

The colours each refer to a pupil. The bright red wire and the pale pink wire take up Tanjiro’s mask, with its fan on the temple. The golden yellow wire and the yellow and blue wire take up Makomo’s. The intense bright pink wire refers to Sabito. Three other colours, white and pink, white and red, and orange, leave the choice to those who prefer a colour to a specific character.

For a night photo, the steady mode gives the sharpest result, the flashing modes make their effect in motion, in a parade or a video. The light-up mask stays light and can be pushed up on the head like a painted mask. For a Halloween parade with children, it also has a practical advantage: you can spot the wearer from afar in the dark, which is reassuring when the crowd is dense. Our guide to the Tanjiro cosplay shows how to pair it with the checkered haori.

Inosuke’s boar heads

Inosuke grew up in the mountains, raised by boars, and he wears a hollowed-out boar’s head that he almost never takes off. The section offers several versions. The full mask, at €54.90, wraps the whole head and comes down over the nape, in bristling grey faux fur, with a pink snout moulded in relief, two white tusks, blue eyes set very wide apart and pointed ears. It is pulled on from below and rests on the shoulders.

Inosuke Hashibira, the boar’s head over his face, a serrated blade in each hand, in the drum house, Demon Slayer

The two Inosuke cosplays also offer their mask alone, at €44.90 and €69.90. For a lighter version that leaves the face free, the faux fur beanie at €64.90 reproduces the boar’s head in 3D on the head, and the hood with flaps, at €44.90, extends it with two panels that come down along the cheeks. These two models can be worn for a whole day without tiring.

The choice between these versions depends on the use. For a convention where you stand all day, the beanie or the hood, which let you see and breathe freely. For a photo shoot or a parade, the full mask, which makes the strongest impact. For winter, the hood with flaps also protects the ears from the cold. Our Demon Slayer beanie section gathers the beanie and the hood.

The full mask is the most spectacular, but also the warmest and heaviest: wear it for photos and push it up between poses. Our guide to the complete Inosuke cosplay details each version, and our Inosuke Hashibira Demon Slayer collection gathers all his items.

The swordsmiths’ hyottoko mask

In the Swordsmith Village, all the inhabitants wear a hyottoko mask, that comic character with a pursed mouth and crooked eyes. The mask hides their identity, so that demons cannot follow them to the village. The most famous of these masks is that of Hotaru Haganezuka, the swordsmith of Tanjiro’s swords, who chases him with knives every time he damages a blade.

Hotaru Haganezuka, his hyottoko mask over his face, wind chimes hanging from his straw hat, Demon Slayer

The Haganezuka cosplay offers his mask alone at €64.90. It measures 26 cm high by 16.5 cm wide: a pink face with a balding head, puffed-out cheeks, wide round eyes and an O-shaped mouth, extended by a white headband with black polka dots that ties behind the head. The complete cosplay adds a pale green haori with large grey stars, a black crossed kimono and a mustard hakama, from XS to XXXL.

It is the funniest mask in the section, the one that makes fans burst out laughing at conventions. The village swordsmiths are distinguished by small variations of the same face, and Kotetsu, the young swordsmith who helps Tanjiro, has a face so close to his mask that he was advised to stop wearing it. It works on its own, over a dark outfit, or with the complete cosplay. For the perfect effect, add a straw hat decorated with little bells, like Haganezuka’s. Our article on Hotaru Haganezuka, Tanjiro’s swordsmith tells about this short-tempered character.

Obanai’s mouth mask

Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira, is recognised by three details: his eyes of two colours, the white bandage that covers the lower half of his face, and Kaburamaru, the white snake coiled around his neck. The mouth mask in the section takes up the bandage: a rigid white shell, pleated in three diagonal raised bands like a wrapped fabric frozen in place, which covers the lower face, from under the eyes to under the chin.

Two points rise on each side, at the level of the cheekbones. A white elastic band goes behind the head rather than over the ears, which keeps the profile clean. It costs €49.90, in one size, and suits teenagers and adults alike. Combined with the Obanai cosplay, black and white striped haori and wavy blade, it completes the silhouette of one of the most mysterious Hashira.

Obanai’s mask is more comfortable than a full mask: it leaves the eyes and forehead free, and can be kept on all day. Our article on Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira tells his past, and our Obanai Iguro Demon Slayer collection gathers his cosplay and items.

Mask and complete cosplay

A mask alone is often enough for a nod, but it takes on its full strength with the outfit that goes with it. Tanjiro’s fox mask is worn with the green and black checkered haori, pushed up on the side of the head, as during the Final Selection. Makomo’s goes with her pink kimono with white flowers, the navy overlayer and the striped obi: her cosplay is in fact sold with or without the mask. Sabito’s completes his ivory haori and his kimono with geometric patterns.

For a group of friends, Urokodaki’s three pupils make an original trio: Tanjiro, Sabito and Makomo, each with their fox mask, and why not a fourth as Urokodaki, with a red tengu. Fans will immediately recognise the training scene on Mount Sagiri. Our Tanjiro Kamado Demon Slayer collection gathers the hero’s cosplay, and our Hashira cosplay collection those of Obanai and the other elite fighters.

For Inosuke, the mask does it all: with the boar’s head, loose trousers and a fur skirt, the character is complete. For Haganezuka, the hyottoko mask over a dark outfit and a straw hat are enough. For Obanai, the mouth mask calls for at least the striped haori and, ideally, a plush white snake around the neck. Our page on the Demon Slayer Hashira presents Obanai and the other eight.

Wearing a mask comfortably

A mask always reduces sight and breathing a little. Fox masks cover the face but let air through at the eyes and the bottom; they are easily pushed up onto the head. The full boar’s head limits the view to the sides and downwards, and is warm: do not keep it on for more than half an hour at a time. The hyottoko, large and flat, is mainly worn for the length of a photo.

In a crowd, push your mask up to walk and pull it down to pose: you will see better where you are going, and you will not bump into anyone. Drink regularly, and take breaks in the open air, especially with faux fur masks, which hold in the heat of the face. Some conventions ask you to be able to show your face at the entrance or to security staff: a mask that can be pushed up in one movement solves the issue.

For a child, prefer a light painted fox mask, or a boar beanie that leaves the face free. Full masks, heavy and warm, are better suited to teenagers and adults. Our page on Demon Slayer for children gives guidelines by age.

Care, budget and delivery

Painted plastic masks and light-up masks are cleaned with a damp cloth, without harsh products that would dull the paint. Store them flat or hanging, away from direct sunlight, and avoid stacking them, which ends up scratching the paint on the ears and muzzle. For the light-up masks, switch off the wire after use and check its power supply before each outing. The faux fur boar heads are gently brushed in the direction of the pile, washed by hand in cold water without wringing, and stored stuffed with paper to keep their volume.

The smallest budget is the painted fox mask, at €17.90. Then count €44.90 for the boar hood, €44.90 for a light-up mask, €44.90 for the mask alone from the first Inosuke cosplay, €49.90 for Obanai’s mask, €54.90 for the full mask, €64.90 for the boar beanie, €64.90 for the hyottoko mask and €69.90 for the mask alone from the second Inosuke cosplay. Our page on all the Demon Slayer characters helps you choose, and our selection of Demon Slayer Halloween costumes gathers the complete outfits. Items are delivered in 5 to 12 days depending on where you live.
