Tanjiro cosplay: haori, earrings and katana

In short

A Tanjiro cosplay comes down to a few signs: the green and black chequered haori worn open over the black Corps uniform, the white belt, the burgundy hair, the scar on the forehead, the hanafuda earrings, the fox mask and a black-bladed katana. The shop offers the complete cosplay in five combinations, from €39.90 for the wig to €79.90 for the full set, from S to XXL, the Corps uniform in children’s sizes from 120 cm, and katanas from €79.90 to €119.90.

Tanjiro Kamado, in uniform and chequered haori, his sword held upright in front of his face, a determined look, season 1, Demon Slayer

He carries his sister on his back, weeps for the demons he has just defeated, and never gives up. Stepping into Tanjiro’s shoes means wearing the hero everyone recognises: at a convention, at Halloween or at a fancy dress party, the green and black chequers turn heads even before anyone sees your face.

This guide details the character’s signs, the complete cosplay and its five combinations, the solution for children, the earrings, the mask, the katana, the scar and care. Formats and wigs in general are covered in our guide to choosing a Demon Slayer cosplay, and our other tips on the shop’s guides and tips page.

What makes a Tanjiro cosplay?

The sea green and black chequered haori is sign number one. Worn open over the uniform, it identifies Tanjiro from the front as from behind, from twenty metres away as up close. Underneath, the black uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps, with a high collar, the character 滅 on the back, a white belt with a buckle and baggy trousers.

Then come the details of the face: the tousled burgundy hair, the scar on the left side of the forehead, and the hanafuda earrings, those red-sun cards hanging from his ears. Then the accessories: the fox mask his master gave him, and the black-bladed katana. In Demon Slayer, he also carries on his back the box where Nezuko sleeps.

Our page Tanjiro Kamado, everything about the hero tells his story, and the complete Tanjiro Kamado collection brings together his whole range.

The chequers first

The green and black chequered haori, worn open over the uniform, is enough to make Tanjiro recognisable from the front as from behind.

Which Tanjiro to portray?

Tanjiro changes appearance over the course of Demon Slayer, and each stage makes a different cosplay. Before joining the Corps, during his training and at the Final Selection, he wears a blue kimono with a cloud pattern, his fox mask pushed up on his head: this is the Tanjiro of the very first episodes, an apprentice still unknown.

Once a slayer, he switches to the black Corps uniform and the chequered haori, the outfit everyone knows, the one of the Mount Natagumo, Mugen Train and Entertainment District arcs. It is the version the shop’s complete cosplay reproduces, and the easiest to recognise.

During the Hashira Training, he swaps the uniform for light clothing and a white headband on his forehead. And in the final battle, the scar has turned into a blazing mark, the face is marked by the fights: it is the most intense Tanjiro, for those who followed Demon Slayer to the end.

For a first cosplay, choose the chequered Tanjiro. For a second one, or to stand out at a convention, the Final Selection Tanjiro or the one from the last night will surprise fans. Our article on what makes Tanjiro so endearing will remind you why this character appeals to so many people.

The complete cosplay in five combinations

The Tanjiro cosplay is put together à la carte, in five options, from S to XXL. The wig alone costs €39.90, the wig with the mask €49.90, the uniform alone €54.90, the haori with the uniform €69.90, and the full set €79.90, earrings included.

The haori reproduces the sea green and black chequers in large squares, sleeves included. The uniform jacket is black, high-collared, with light buttons and the white ideogram on the back. The white belt with buckle marks the waist, the trousers are baggy. The wig is burgundy and spiky. The fox mask is white with red markings, and the earrings carry the sun design.

The burgundy wig is styled with the fingertips, lock by lock, to recover the character’s tousled look: avoid a brush, which flattens it. If you already have black trousers and a high-collared jacket, the wig and mask are enough to complete the look. If you are starting from scratch, the full set works out cheaper than buying the pieces separately. All the slayer outfits are gathered in the slayer cosplays collection.

For a child: the Corps uniform

The complete Tanjiro cosplay is cut for teenagers and adults. For a younger child, the Demon Slayer Corps uniform comes in children’s sizes, from 120 to 150 cm: a black high-collared jacket, three gold buttons, a white band across the chest, a large white ideogram on the back, black pleated hakama and white belt. It costs €64.90 on its own, €69.90 with a wig.

Be sure to measure the child, barefoot, back against a wall, and rely on the sizes shown on the product page: it is height that counts, not age. If your child is between two sizes, take the larger one, trousers that are too long can be rolled up. Tanjiro is often the first cosplay for children discovering Demon Slayer, and our page Demon Slayer for children, a guide by age gathers other tips for families.

To turn the uniform into Tanjiro, add the chequers. The Tanjiro-pattern haori on its own, at €22.90, starts at XS: compare its measurement chart with your child’s build before ordering. A fox mask at €9.90 and a pair of clip-on hanafuda earrings finish the character. The wig offered with the uniform is black and turns turquoise over the lower half: for a Tanjiro, keep your child’s own hair or choose the burgundy wig from the complete cosplay.

The hanafuda earrings

Tanjiro’s earrings are much more than an accessory. These red-sun hanafuda cards come from his father, Tanjuro, who had them from his ancestors. Four centuries earlier, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the creator of Sun Breathing, already wore the same ones. That is why Muzan recognises them at first sight, and sends his demons to kill the boy who wears them.

The range offers several pairs at €9.90, as 7 cm acrylic plaques or in openwork metal. The acrylic models come as stud, clip-on or hook: the clip-on suits unpierced ears, a real advantage for a one-night cosplay or for a child. Tanjiro wears one in each ear: put on both, the pair shows from the front in every photo. The openwork metal models trace the sun and its rays in lace, in black, gold or grey, the last two with an enamelled red sun. They join the series’ other jewellery in the collection of all Demon Slayer jewellery.

Our article on Tanjiro’s hanafuda earrings tells their story, and every pair is in the Demon Slayer earrings collection.

The fox mask

Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro’s master, wears a red tengu mask, and carves for each of his pupils a fox mask meant to protect them from misfortune. Tanjiro receives his before the Final Selection, and wears it pushed up on the side of his head during the trial. It is a detail fans spot straight away.

The cosplay’s wig and mask combination, at €49.90, includes a white mask with red markings. The range also offers fox masks in painted plastic at €9.90, each with its own markings, and light-up masks at €39.90, edged with a wire that lights up in the dark, in pink, red, golden yellow or yellow and blue, with three lighting modes: handy for a Halloween evening, when you are spotted from afar.

Between photos, wear the mask pushed up on the side of your head, like Tanjiro: you avoid putting it down on the floor in a convention aisle. Our portrait of Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro’s master tells where these masks come from.

Which katana for Tanjiro?

A katana at the belt completes any cosplay, and for Tanjiro, it is almost compulsory. His blade is black, a rare colour no one in the Corps knows how to read, and which sends his swordsmith Haganezuka into a black rage. All our replicas have a blunt blade, designed for display and cosplay.

The sword is worn on the left, the scabbard slipped into the white belt, the handle forward, as all the slayers in the series do. For a photo, hold it in both hands in front of you, blade raised: it is Tanjiro’s guard before each Water Breathing form, and the pose fans recognise immediately.

The black-bladed replica, at €79.90, is the most faithful: 104 cm with the scabbard, a 75 cm bamboo blade, a black wheel guard pierced with slots, a black handle with red diamonds, silver fittings. The white-bladed LED katana, at €89.90, in bamboo and acrylic, comes in 80 or 100 cm: the same wheel guard and the same handle, with a blade that lights up a cold white and recharges through the pommel. The scarlet-bladed LED mist katana, at €119.90, in wood and acrylic, recalls the red blade of the final battles and gives off a cold mist.

For a Halloween evening or a convention in a dark hall, an LED katana can be seen from afar and gives the impression of a blade in full breathing: all the light-up models are in the LED katanas collection. For a duo, the set of two 104 cm replicas at €99.90 brings together a black blade and a red blade with a green openwork guard. Our guide to choosing a Demon Slayer katana compares all the models, and the collection of all katanas gathers them. Our article on Tanjiro’s black sword tells of Haganezuka’s rage.

The scar and the mark on the forehead

Tanjiro has had a scar on the left side of his forehead since childhood: he got it protecting one of his little brothers from an overturned brazier. Later, it turns into a flame-shaped mark: the Demon Slayer Mark, which greatly increases his strength.

To reproduce it, a burgundy or reddish-brown skin pencil is enough. For the early Tanjiro, draw a patch with irregular outlines, from the left eyebrow towards the hairline. For the late Tanjiro, extend it into flames rising towards the top of the forehead. Do a trial the day before, and test the product on a small patch of skin, especially for a child. Water-based make-up comes off with a simple make-up remover, without rubbing, and does not stain the uniform’s collar.

Our article on Tanjiro’s mark shows how it evolves, fight after fight.

As a duo, a trio or a family

Tanjiro rarely goes alone. The duo with Nezuko is the most obvious: him in the chequered haori, her in the pink kimono and bamboo muzzle. Our guide to Nezuko cosplay details her outfit, and the complete Nezuko Kamado collection brings together her range.

Nezuko Kamado, the bamboo muzzle between her teeth, looking out through the opening of her wooden box, in the half-light, season 1, Demon Slayer

With three or four, add Zenitsu and his yellow triangle haori, Inosuke and his boar head: the Demon Slayer trio, with Nezuko on top, makes one of the most recognisable groups at a convention. For the photo, put Tanjiro in the centre, sword in hand, and the others around him, each in their breathing style’s pose. For a parent and child, Tanjiro and Urokodaki, or Tanjiro and Giyu Tomioka, tell the relationship between a pupil and those who guided him. With Rengoku, it is the night of the Mugen Train that comes back, and the flame haori next to the chequers makes one of the finest pairs in Demon Slayer. Our article on the Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke trio tells of their friendship, and our page on all the Demon Slayer characters helps you put the group together.

Wearing and caring for the costume

Fasten the uniform up to the collar under the haori: it is the black background that brings out the chequers, and a half-open jacket blurs the silhouette. The haori, on the other hand, stays open. Its wide sleeves can be tied back with a cord passed behind the back to move around without catching anything, and loosened in one movement when it is time for photos.

The chequers are ironed at a low temperature and on the reverse, so the squares do not shine. The earrings are stored separately, in a small pouch, so they do not bend. The mask is kept in a soft bag, safe from scratches. For the rest, follow each piece’s label, and dry the haori on a hanger so the chequers stay nice and straight. Our Demon Slayer merchandise guide presents the rest of the range.

For a katana, check the event’s rules in advance: some conventions and most schools regulate sword replicas, even light-up ones. The haori, wig and mask are then enough to make the character.

In high summer, the full uniform is hot. The haori on its own at €22.90, light, with three-quarter sleeves, is worn over a black t-shirt and keeps the chequers without the heat. It is also the solution for a whole day at a convention, where you queue standing one after another.

Budget and delivery

Count €39.90 to €79.90 for the cosplay depending on the combination, €64.90 for the children’s uniform, €9.90 for a pair of earrings or a painted mask, and €79.90 to €119.90 for a katana. A complete Tanjiro, outfit, earrings and black-bladed replica, comes to €159.80. You can also build it step by step: the wig and mask for a first fancy dress birthday, the uniform and haori for Halloween, the katana for the summer convention. At each step, the character gains in likeness, and the next party becomes a new occasion to wear it.

Allow 5 to 12 days for delivery depending on location. Delivery is free in France, with no minimum purchase, and every parcel is tracked: for a convention or for Halloween, order as soon as the date is known. All the outfits are gathered in the collection of all cosplays, and the gift ideas selection helps if the costume is a gift. The Demon Slayer Halloween costumes collection brings together the season’s other outfits.
