Nezuko’s transformation into a demon: what changes, and what remains

In short

Nezuko becomes a demon on the night Muzan massacres her family: wounded, she received his blood and wakes up transformed while Tanjiro carries her through the snow. She gains fangs, pink claws, orange tips to her hair, a strength that grows with every fight, and the ability to change size. Yet she keeps enough humanity to protect her brother, refuses human flesh, and becomes human again at the end thanks to Tamayo’s cure.

Nezuko Kamado, hands joined in front of her and a worried look, her pink eyes raised, on a black background, Demon Slayer

A twelve-year-old girl falls asleep human and wakes up a demon, in her brother’s arms, in the middle of a snowy forest. All of Demon Slayer starts from this transformation. It is the reason Tanjiro takes up the sword, and the question he seeks to answer throughout the series: can it be undone?

This article follows Nezuko’s transformation step by step, from the night of the massacre to the cure, pausing on what changes in her body and on what does not. It compares her case with that of the other characters who became demons, and ends with a practical question: how to recreate this metamorphosis in cosplay. Our page Nezuko Kamado, everything about Tanjiro’s sister presents the whole character.

How do you become a demon in Demon Slayer?

In Demon Slayer, all demons descend from a single one: Muzan Kibutsuji. To transform a human, he gives them his blood. The Upper Moons can pass this blood on in turn, as Doma did with Gyutaro and his sister, or Kokushibo with Kaigaku, but it is always Muzan’s blood at work.

The dose decides everything. Too much blood, and the recipient’s body cannot hold out: its cells break down and it dies. The right dose, and it wakes up a demon, starving, with muddled memories. Many attack their loved ones first, because they are the first humans within reach.

The new demon stops ageing and heals its wounds in a few moments. It now fears only two things: the sun, and a Nichirin blade at its neck. The more humans it devours, the stronger it becomes. Muzan sees through its eyes and can kill it with a single thought, unless it has freed itself from his control, like Tamayo. Our page on Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki details this hierarchy.

A question of dose

Muzan’s blood kills those who receive too much of it. Those who survive become demons.

The night Nezuko changes

One winter evening, Tanjiro goes down to town to sell his charcoal and spends the night at an old man’s home. Meanwhile, Muzan enters the Kamado house. In the morning, in the scene that opens Demon Slayer, Tanjiro finds his family dead in the snow. Only Nezuko is still breathing, wounded, her body still warm.

He lifts her onto his back and heads down the mountain to find a doctor. It is on this path that the transformation takes place. Muzan’s blood has entered her wounds, and her body, instead of giving way like those of her mother and brothers, has accepted it. Our article on the whole Kamado family tells of who lived in that house.

Why her, and not the others, the story does not say in a single sentence. It only shows that her body was capable of an extraordinary adaptation, the one that will later allow her to conquer the sun. Tamayo, the demon doctor, will confirm it by studying her blood.

The first signs, in the snow

Nezuko wakes up suddenly and throws herself at her brother. They slide down a slope, she rises above him, taller than before, her fangs inches from his face. Tanjiro begs her to hold on. Then tears run down the demon’s cheeks: something in her has recognised her brother.

Giyu Tomioka appears at that moment, come to kill the demon. He knocks Tanjiro out. Nezuko, instead of taking the opportunity to devour the unconscious boy, stands in front of him and attacks the Hashira to protect him. No ordinary demon would have done that. It is this act that convinces Giyu to spare the two children, and to send them to his former master.

Before leaving, Tomioka wedges a piece of bamboo between her teeth, to stop her from biting. Our article on Nezuko’s bamboo muzzle tells the story of this now famous object.

What changes in her body

Nezuko’s transformation can be seen, and it is lived. Here is what Muzan’s blood changes in Demon Slayer’s heroine, from head to toe.

Feature What changes
Teeth sharp fangs appear
Nails pink, long and pointed like claws
Hair the tips turn flame orange
Strength that of a demon, and it grows with every fight
Wounds they close up, even a severed limb
Food replaced by long periods of sleep
Speech almost lost, barely a few words
Sun deadly to her, until the swordsmith village

The sun changes her everyday life. For more than two years, Nezuko only goes out after nightfall. By day, she sleeps in a wooden box that Tanjiro carries on his back, or hides in the shade. The slightest ray burns her.

Her silence also has a cause. Tamayo will later explain that Nezuko’s body was devoting its strength to preparing for the sun rather than to giving her back her consciousness. Hence that vacant look, that way of acting like a little child, those words that will not come. Our article on Nezuko Kamado’s powers details each of these changes.

A demon who changes size

Very early on, Nezuko discovers a talent that few demons in Demon Slayer possess: she changes the size of her body. She shrinks to the size of a very small girl to fit in her box, and grows to that of an adult when there is fighting to be done.

This power serves her in almost every arc. In Asakusa, she kicks Susamaru’s balls back at her. On Mount Natagumo, she protects her brother at full size. Then she becomes tiny again, slips into her box and falls asleep, as if nothing had happened.

The box itself was carved by Urokodaki from a light, sturdy wood. Our article on Nezuko’s wooden box tells how she travelled inside it for months, and the complete Nezuko Kamado collection brings together her figures.

Anger and the awakened form

When Nezuko gets angry, the demon comes to the surface. Veins bulge on her forehead, her eyes change, and her strength goes up a notch. Her blood becomes a weapon: it bursts into a pink fire that burns only demons, Exploding Blood, one of the most unusual powers in Demon Slayer. Our pair of Nezuko Crocs with pink flames carries this fire over the whole shoe.

In the Entertainment District, when Daki threatens to kill Tanjiro, she goes further. Her body takes on the appearance of an adult, a white horn grows on the right side of her forehead, and red and green vine patterns run across her skin. This is the awakened form. For the first time, her restraint wavers, and she almost attacks a human. Tanjiro brings her back by singing their mother’s lullaby to her.

This form returns in the swordsmith village, more controlled. Our article on Nezuko’s awakened form compares the two occasions.

What she refuses to become

Nezuko’s transformation is complete in her body, but not in her mind. She eats no humans throughout Demon Slayer. She regains her strength by sleeping, and this sleep sometimes lasts for days. During her first two years, she hardly wakes up at all.

Tamayo, the demon doctor, at night under the cherry trees of Asakusa, in her dark flowered kimono, season 1, Demon Slayer

Urokodaki took advantage of this long sleep to repeat one idea to her: all humans are her family, all demons are her enemies. In front of the Hashira, Sanemi holds out his bloodied arm to test her. She turns her head away. Our articles on Nezuko and the question of human flesh and on the hypnosis Urokodaki placed on her tell of these two scenes.

Tamayo is the only other demon in the series who refuses to kill. She makes do with a little blood bought from donors, and has spent centuries looking for a way to undo what Muzan does. It is she who will understand Nezuko best, and who will finally cure her.

The other transformations in the series

Nezuko is not the only one to have changed sides, against her will or by choice. Demon Slayer tells of several transformations, and each one says something about the character.

Tamayo accepts Muzan’s blood to survive an illness, then, seized by hunger, devours her husband and her children. Akaza receives it after massacring his fiancée’s murderers. Kokushibo asks for it to escape the death the mark promises him. Kaigaku drinks it to save his life in front of Kokushibo. Gyutaro and Ume receive it from Doma, on the brink of death.

Genya Shinazugawa, his face transformed after eating demon flesh, in the swordsmith village, season 3, Demon Slayer

Genya is a special case: he eats demon flesh to borrow their powers, without entirely becoming one. And Tanjiro, at the very end, receives all of the dying Muzan’s blood. He becomes a demon who withstands the sun, and it takes Tamayo’s cure, injected by Kanao, and the call of those who love him to bring him back. Our article on Tanjiro’s ending tells of this last transformation, and our page on all the Demon Slayer characters presents each of them, humans and demons alike.

The reverse transformation

For almost all of Demon Slayer, everyone holds that it is impossible to make a demon human again. Tanjiro nonetheless promises his sister he will find a cure, and our page Tanjiro Kamado, everything about the hero tells how that promise guides his whole journey. He sends Tamayo samples of demon blood, then of Nezuko’s, which the demon studies with the help of Shinobu Kocho.

The cure arrives during the final battle. Nezuko takes it far from the fighting, at Urokodaki’s home. Her fangs and claws disappear, her memories come back all at once, and she runs to join her brother on the battlefield. From her life as a demon, she keeps only the orange tips of her hair. Our article on Nezuko’s return to humanity tells of this race.

Recreating the transformation in cosplay

Demon Nezuko is one of the most recognisable Demon Slayer cosplays, and her transformation lends itself well to make-up. Start with the outfit: pink kimono with a hemp leaf pattern, black haori, checked obi, bamboo muzzle. Our complete cosplay comes with or without a black wig with ginger tips, and the demon cosplays collection offers others.

For the face, a few strokes of skin make-up are enough. Draw fine dark pink veins running from the temples towards the eyes, and paint your nails pale pink. For the awakened form, add a small light-coloured horn on the right side of the forehead and vine patterns on the arms. Always test the make-up on a small patch of skin before you start. For a Halloween party, the demon with pink veins makes quite an impression, and the Demon Slayer Halloween costumes collection brings together others.

For a child, be sure to measure them and go by the sizes shown on the product page: our children’s Nezuko cosplay comes in several sizes. And if someone close to you dresses up as Tanjiro by your side, the complete Tanjiro Kamado collection has everything they need, and a katana at the belt completes the silhouette: our guide to choosing your katana helps you find the right one.
