Zenitsu in the Drum House, Tanjiro mid-fight and Inosuke under his boar’s head, the trio taking shape, Demon Slayer

The Drum House arc: the birth of the Demon Slayer trio

In short

The Drum House, or Tsuzumi Mansion, is the fourth arc of Demon Slayer, from chapters 20 to 27, in volumes 3 and 4, adapted in episodes 11 to 14 of season 1. There Tanjiro meets Zenitsu Agatsuma, then Inosuke Hashibira: the trio forms in a mansion whose rooms turn to the rhythm of Kyogai’s drums, a former Lower Moon. Wounded, Tanjiro wins by respecting the demon’s manuscripts, then the trio rests in a wisteria house.

A blond boy on his knees begs a stranger to marry him. Another, bare-chested under a boar’s head, charges at anything that moves. Tanjiro does not know it yet, but he has just met the two friends who will never leave him. The Drum House is the arc in which the Demon Slayer trio is born, and in which the series finds its tone, between chills and bursts of laughter.

Here is what this arc tells, where it sits in the manga and the anime, and why it matters so much for what follows. To place each arc in the complete story, our page on all the Demon Slayer arcs presents them in order.

Where does the Drum House fit?

The Drum House is the fourth of the twelve arcs of the Demon Slayer manga. It follows the Asakusa arc and precedes Mount Natagumo. The table places it in the manga and on screen.

The birth of the trio

In Demon Slayer, the Drum House brings Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke together for the first time: the series’ trio is born in this arc.

Zenitsu, the most fearful of demon slayers

On the road, Tanjiro comes across a strange sight: a boy with yellow hair, on his knees before a girl, begging her to marry him because he is sure he will die soon. It is Zenitsu Agatsuma, a demon slayer from the same intake as Tanjiro, who also went through the Final Selection. The girl slaps him, and Tanjiro drags him away, embarrassed.

Zenitsu Agatsuma, his hand on his cheek, and Tanjiro Kamado look up at the sky in the forest, season 1, Demon Slayer

Zenitsu is afraid of everything. He cries, complains, keeps saying he is going to die. His messenger bird is not even a crow, but a little sparrow, Chuntaro, who seems as discouraged as Tanjiro. The usually patient boy ends up losing his temper at so much wailing.

Yet Tanjiro senses something else beneath the tears. Zenitsu survived the Final Selection, seven nights on Mount Fujikasane, like him: no one comes out of it alive without real strength, even when they spend their time denying it. Our portrait of Zenitsu Agatsuma, the most fearful of demon slayers tells his story, and our article on Thunder Breathing presents his fighting style.

The Tsuzumi Mansion and the children

The crow leads the two boys to a large isolated house, from which drum sounds escape. In front of the door, two terrified children, Shoichi and Teruko: their elder brother, Kiyoshi, has been kidnapped by a monster and dragged inside. A man covered in blood falls from a window and dies before their eyes.

Tanjiro decides to go in with Zenitsu. He leaves Nezuko’s box near the children, promising them she will protect them. But the box starts scratching from the inside, and Shoichi and Teruko, terrified, rush into the house in turn. At once, a drumbeat rings out, and the room turns on itself. The group is separated.

Kiyoshi, for his part, defends himself as best he can. A drum that fell from Kyogai’s body has rolled to him, and he beats it whenever a demon approaches: his room swivels and puts him out of reach. Tanjiro finds him with Teruko, entrusts him with his little sister and asks him to keep beating until he returns. A terrified boy holding off demons with a stolen drum: the arc loves these unexpected heroes.

Kiyoshi was captured for a specific reason: he has rare blood, which gives demons far more strength than ordinary blood. Several demons are fighting over the child inside the house. Our article on the wisteria houses presents these refuges where demon slayers rest, which the trio will discover at the end of the arc.

Kyogai and his drums

The master of the house is called Kyogai. Drums are grafted into his flesh, on his shoulders, thighs and belly. Depending on the drum he strikes, the house swivels right, left, tips forwards or backwards, or invisible claws rake the walls.

Kyogai, the red-eyed demon, a drum grafted onto his shoulder, in the turning house, season 1, Demon Slayer

Kyogai is a former Lower Moon, Lower Moon Six. Muzan struck him off the Twelve Kizuki and slashed the eye where his rank was engraved. Since then, he has been trying to regain it by devouring humans with rare blood, like Kiyoshi. He is the first former member of the Twelve Kizuki that Tanjiro faces.

For Tanjiro, it is also a chance to take blood for Tamayo, as promised in Asakusa. After the fight, a cat sent by the demon doctor will come to collect the sample. Our portrait of Kyogai, the drum demon tells his past, and our page on the demons and the Twelve Kizuki explains the rank system.

Our ring takes up this pale, red-eyed face in enamel, on an adjustable band for everyday wear. It is filed in the Demon Slayer rings collection.

A fallen Moon

Kyogai was Lower Moon Six before Muzan stripped him of his rank: he wants to win it back by devouring humans with rare blood.

Zenitsu, asleep and formidable

Separated from Tanjiro, Zenitsu finds himself with Shoichi, the little brother, facing a long-tongued demon. He panics, screams, then faints from fear. And that is when everything changes: his body gets up, eyes closed, and a flash crosses the room. The demon is beheaded before he understands.

When he wakes up, Zenitsu remembers nothing, and Shoichi stares open-mouthed at this boy who was whimpering a minute earlier. This comic device will become one of the trademarks of Demon Slayer: Zenitsu only fights well asleep, when his fear finally leaves him alone.

The blow is the first form of Thunder Breathing, known in English as Thunderclap and Flash. It is the only one Zenitsu has mastered, but he has repeated it thousands of times, to the point of making it a weapon faster than the eye. In the anime, ufotable turns it into a yellow flash that crosses the room in an instant, so fast that the demon sees nothing coming.

Our pop figure takes up this Zenitsu with closed eyelids, yellow haori with orange triangles and upper body leaning forward. It is filed in the complete Zenitsu Agatsuma collection and the pop figures collection.

Inosuke enters the scene

In the middle of the fight a third demon slayer bursts in, whom no one was expecting. Bare-chested, a boar’s head on his shoulders, two swords in his hands, he charges at demons and humans alike. It is Inosuke Hashibira, also from the same intake, who is looking for only one thing: a fight with someone strong.

Inosuke grew up alone in the mountains, raised by boars. He speaks badly, mangles names, and understands nothing of the Corps’ rules. He even attacks Tanjiro, in the middle of the turning house, before a drumbeat separates them.

His fighting style is as wild as he is, and he invented it without a master. Our portrait of Inosuke Hashibira, the boar-headed boy tells his story, and our article on Beast Breathing presents his technique. Our pop figure shows him on all fours, boar mask on his head, in the complete Inosuke Hashibira collection.

Tanjiro, the manuscripts and respect

Tanjiro faces Kyogai in a sorry state. He still has broken ribs and a broken leg from the fight in Asakusa, and every movement hurts him. In the turning house, he nonetheless has to dodge the claws, find his balance and strike at the right moment.

A foot in tabi steps between Kyogai’s manuscripts scattered across the floor of the house, season 1, Demon Slayer

Sheets covered in writing litter the floor: they are the manuscripts of Kyogai, who wanted to be a writer before becoming a demon. A man had once trampled on his work, judging it worthless. Tanjiro, for his part, takes care not to step on them, even mid-fight. He finally beheads the demon with Water Breathing.

Before dying, Kyogai hears Tanjiro tell him that his Blood Demon Art was remarkable. These words overwhelm him: for the first time, someone recognises the value of what he created. He dies in tears. The scene sums up how Tanjiro sees demons: monsters to be stopped, but also former humans who were hurt. Our article on why Tanjiro is so loved looks back at this compassion.

Zenitsu protects Nezuko’s box

Outside, Inosuke spots Nezuko’s box and senses that it contains a demon. He wants to destroy it. Zenitsu, the boy who is afraid of everything, throws himself on the box and covers it with his body. Inosuke beats him again and again, but Zenitsu does not let go. He refuses to draw his sword against a comrade, and he refuses to let what Tanjiro entrusted to him be destroyed.

Tanjiro Kamado, fist raised and face furious, in front of the Drum House, season 1, Demon Slayer

Tanjiro comes out of the house and discovers the scene. Furious, he steps in and ends up knocking Inosuke out with a headbutt. The boar mask falls off and reveals a fine, almost feminine face, which leaves Zenitsu speechless. It is the start of a rivalry that will become a solid friendship.

This moment reveals the real Zenitsu. Behind his tears, there is a courage he only shows when it counts. Our article on the Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke trio tells how these three boys became inseparable.

Zenitsu’s courage

The boy who is afraid of everything takes Inosuke’s blows without letting go of Nezuko’s box: Zenitsu’s bravest scene involves no sword stroke at all.

The wisteria house

Exhausted and wounded, the three boys find refuge in a wisteria house. These homes, kept by families grateful to the demon slayers, welcome those returning from missions free of charge. The old lady who receives them treats them, feeds them and offers them a bath.

The stay is an occasion for lighter scenes. Inosuke, who has never known a home, discovers that people can speak to him gently, and this kindness disarms him far more than a sword stroke. Zenitsu, for his part, finally learns that the box contains Nezuko, a girl, and immediately falls in love with her.

This interlude bonds the trio. They fought together, they suffered together, and they set off again together. Our article on Nezuko and Zenitsu follows this romance, and our page Tanjiro Kamado, everything about the hero follows his whole journey.

What the Drum House arc changes

Before this arc, Tanjiro fought alone, with Nezuko. Afterwards, he has two companions, as different as can be: a coward who fights asleep and a wild boy who charges head down. The trio becomes the heart of Demon Slayer, the one that will carry the following big arcs, from Mount Natagumo to the Entertainment District.

The arc also sets up a balance of tone unique to the series. The fights are violent, Kyogai’s past is sad, and yet there is plenty of laughter, thanks to Zenitsu’s screams and Inosuke’s tantrums. This mix will become Demon Slayer’s signature, and it is in these chapters that the trio starts bickering the way it will until the last pages of the manga, on the train as in the castle. What comes next takes the trio to Mount Natagumo, the mountain of spiders. Our article on the Mount Natagumo arc tells of this decisive night.
