In Demon Slayer, Zenitsu owes everything to an old man he calls "Gramps." Jigoro Kuwajima was a Thunder Hashira until the day he lost his right leg to a demon at the age of thirty-five. He retired from combat, but not from the Corps: he has walked with a wooden leg and a cane ever since, dedicating his life to training Demon Slayers in the art of Thunder Breathing. He is the one who took in Zenitsu, a boy who would cry, run away, and faint at the slightest sign of danger.

Jigoro never gives up on his student. He chases him when he runs away, searches for him high up in the trees, and repeats to him that a single technique, mastered to perfection, can be enough. Zenitsu only masters one, the First Form, yet the old man makes him his successor, on par with his other student, Kaigaku. Every time Zenitsu falls asleep in battle and the lightning strikes, it is the teachings of this master with the wooden leg that hit home.
