Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, a chilling smile in the night on Mount Natagumo, season 1 of Demon Slayer

Insect Breathing: Shinobu’s poisoned dances

In short

Insect Breathing is the breathing style of Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira of Demon Slayer. Too slight to cut through a demon’s neck, she invented it from the Flower Breathing of her sister Kanae, itself derived from Water. Its forms do not cut: they are very fast thrusts, delivered with a thin blade that injects a poison drawn from wisteria. They are called dances, and four are known, from the butterfly to the centipede.

Shinobu Kocho smiles all the time. She speaks gently, teases the other Hashira kindly, and treats the wounded at the Butterfly Mansion. Behind that smile, Tanjiro immediately senses an immense anger. Insect Breathing is its weapon: a style born from a weakness, and turned into a deadly poison.

Here is where this breathing style comes from, its four dances, the unique weapon it requires, and the fight Shinobu prepared it for over years. To place Insect among the other breathing styles, our page on all the Demon Slayer breathing styles presents the fourteen known styles.

What is Insect Breathing?

In Demon Slayer, Insect Breathing, Mushi no Kokyū in Japanese, is a derived style. Shinobu drew it from the Flower Breathing her sister Kanae practised, itself derived from Water. It is therefore a grandchild of Water, and one of the most personal styles in the whole Corps.

Its particularity fits in a sentence: it is not used to behead. To kill a demon, the rule is simple, you have to cut through its neck with a Nichirin blade. Shinobu, at 151 cm and 37 kg, does not have the strength to do it. So she invented another way: pierce, inject, poison.

Its forms are not called forms but dances. Each bears the name of an insect and takes up its way of attacking: the fluttering butterfly, the bee’s sting, the dragonfly’s compound eye, the centipede’s countless legs. Our article on Flower Breathing presents Kanae’s style, and the one on the breathing tree shows the whole family.

The only Hashira who does not behead

Shinobu Kocho is the only Hashira in Demon Slayer unable to cut through a demon’s neck: her breathing style kills with poison.

The four dances of Insect Breathing

The Insect dances carry a double name: that of an insect, then that of the strike itself. The table sets them out in the order Demon Slayer shows them.

Dance Japanese name What it does
Butterfly Dance Chō no Mai: Tawamure, Caprice A leap into the air, then several thrusts delivered in one go
Bee Sting Dance Hōga no Mai: Manabiki, True Flutter A lightning thrust that crosses the distance in a single stroke
Dance of the Dragonfly Seirei no Mai: Fukugan Rokkaku, Compound Eye Hexagon Six thrusts delivered almost at the same time, too fast to be seen
Centipede Dance Gokō no Mai: Hyakusoku Jabara, Hundred-Foot Zigzag A zigzag run that makes the ground shake before the thrust

Each name describes an image. The dragonfly sees the world through thousands of facets, hence these six blows that come from everywhere at once. The centipede moves forward rippling on dozens of legs, hence these footholds so fast that the floor breaks. And the butterfly, the first insect on the list, recalls the family’s very name: Kocho means “butterfly”.

Demon Slayer only shows these four dances. They are enough to make Shinobu one of the fastest fighters in the Corps, able to strike a demon six times before it understands where the blows are coming from.

A blade made for stinging

Shinobu’s sword looks like no other. The blade is thin, almost a needle, and its tip is pierced with a hole. The sheath contains a mechanism that loads poison into the blade every time she sheathes it. Each thrust injects a dose into the demon’s body.

The poison is drawn from wisteria, the flower demons cannot bear and which protects the mountain of the Final Selection. Shinobu is also a doctor and pharmacist: she changes the composition of the mixture according to the opponent, and sometimes adjusts it mid-fight. For an ordinary demon, a single sting is enough, and the demon decomposes within moments.

This sword and this butterfly-wing haori are reproduced by our 30 cm figure: Shinobu holds her thin blade high, her haori spread behind her like two wings, from white to aqua green then to pink. It is filed in the complete Shinobu Kocho collection and the demon slayer figures collection.

What Insect demands of the fighter

Insect Breathing makes up for strength with speed and precision. Each thrust must reach a precise point on the demon’s body, deep enough for the poison to get through, and fast enough to leave no chance of a counter. Shinobu strikes while leaping, withdraws, and starts again elsewhere, like an insect that stings and flies off.

It also demands knowledge the other breathing styles ignore: chemistry. An Insect demon slayer must know their poisons, their dosage and their effects, and be able to adapt them to a demon they discover mid-fight. That is probably why no other fighter practises it. This style is inseparable from the pharmacist who invented it.

Like all breathing styles, it rests finally on Total Concentration Breathing, which Shinobu masters permanently. At the Butterfly Mansion, she is the one who oversees the Rehabilitation Training in which Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke learn it. Our article on Total Concentration Breathing explains this common foundation.

Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira

Shinobu lost her parents as a child, killed by a demon, before being saved with her sister Kanae by Gyomei Himejima. The two sisters joined the Corps so that no other family would live through the same tragedy. Kanae became the Flower Hashira, Shinobu followed her, and together they ran the Butterfly Mansion.

When Kanae dies, killed by Doma, she asks her sister to live happily and leave the fighting. Shinobu does the opposite. She takes Kanae’s haori, adopts her smile, and devotes her life to finding the demon who killed her. The smile is not hers: it is her sister’s, which she wears like a mask. Kanae loved to see her smile, and Shinobu has forced herself to ever since, even when rage gnaws at her.

At the Butterfly Mansion, she treats Tanjiro after Mount Natagumo. One night, on the roof, she confides her anger to him and Kanae’s dream, which was to save even the demons. She asks him to carry this dream in her place. Our portrait of Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira tells her life, and our article on the Butterfly Mansion presents the place she runs.

The Butterfly Dance on Mount Natagumo

Viewers discover Insect Breathing on Mount Natagumo, in the first season. There Shinobu faces a female demon from Rui’s false family, the white-haired sister. She chats with her, smiles at her, even offers to help her atone, then strikes with a Butterfly Dance.

The poison works in a few seconds. The demon, who thought she had found an ally, collapses as she decomposes. The scene shows all of Shinobu’s ambiguity: an apparent gentleness hiding unwavering determination. She says she wants to be the demons’ friend, and she kills them with a smile, without ever raising her voice.

That same night, Shinobu goes after Nezuko, convinced that a demon remains a demon. Giyu Tomioka steps in and holds her back. Our article on Rui and the spider family tells of that night, and the one on Demon Slayer season 1 places it in the series.

Poison against the Upper Moons

Shinobu’s poison kills ordinary demons, but the Upper Moons are made of sterner stuff. Their bodies adapt, break down the wisteria and end up resisting it. Shinobu knows this. She also knows that Doma, the demon who killed Kanae, is Upper Moon Two.

So she prepares something else. For more than a year, she swallows wisteria every day, in increasing doses, until her whole body is saturated with it. Thirty-seven kilos of poison, her own weight, or seven hundred times the lethal dose for an ordinary demon. She does not intend to kill Doma with her blade. She intends to be devoured.

She confides this plan to Kanao, her disciple, who will have to deliver the final blow. At the same time, she works with Tamayo, the demon doctor, on the remedies meant for Muzan. Our article on Doma and Shinobu tells of this plan in detail.

Shinobu against Doma

In Muzan’s castle, Shinobu finally finds Doma. Their fight is one of the great duels of the first Infinity Castle film, released in 2025. Shinobu throws all her dances at him, the bee sting, the dragonfly, the centipede, and hits the demon several times.

But Doma adapts to each poison within seconds, and the cold of his techniques damages Shinobu’s lungs. She finally lets herself be absorbed, as she had planned. The poison accumulated over months then spreads through the demon’s body, and eats away at him from the inside. It is Kanao and Inosuke who will deliver the final blow, later in the story.

The fight is one of the most heartbreaking in Demon Slayer. Shinobu finally shows her true face there, without a smile, with all the anger she has held back since Kanae’s death. Our portrait of Doma, Upper Moon Two presents the demon, and our article on Infinity Castle, part 1 tells of the film.

To keep Shinobu’s purple blade, our LED mist katana lights up and gives off a cold mist, with an orange flower guard and a white sheath with golden patterns. It is filed in the LED mist katanas collection.

Kocho, the butterfly

Shinobu and Kanae’s family name, Kocho, means “butterfly”: the first Insect dance pays tribute to them.

Insect on screen

On screen, Insect Breathing can be recognised by its butterflies. Each dance comes with purple, iridescent wings whirling around Shinobu, and her leaps make her seem almost weightless. The studio ufotable gave this style a lightness at odds with its deadly nature.

The first Infinity Castle film gave it its finest scene: the duel against Doma, in a hall covered in lotuses and ice. The bee sting, dragonfly and centipede dances all appear there, in a fight where every blow counts. Our article on ufotable, the studio behind the animation tells how these effects take shape.

Aoi, Kanao and the Kocho household

Insect Breathing has no known heir. Shinobu does have a disciple, Kanao Tsuyuri, but she practises Kanae’s Flower. Aoi Kanzaki, who runs the Mansion with her, gave up fighting after the Final Selection, paralysed by fear, and treats the wounded instead.

The whole Kocho household bears Shinobu’s imprint: her remedies, her butterflies, her rigour. She is the one who makes this place a refuge for demon slayers, and it is this household that Kanao defends against Doma. Our portrait of Aoi Kanzaki and the girls of the Mansion presents those who live there.

To find Shinobu among her peers, our page on the Demon Slayer Hashira presents them all, and the one on the demons and the Twelve Kizuki presents Doma.
