In short
The haori is the open jacket every demon slayer in Demon Slayer wears over their uniform, and it is what makes them recognisable. The section offers three families. A light haori in five patterns, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and two versions of Tomioka, at €22.90, from XS to 3XL. Two sheer chiffon haori capes, at €49.90 and €59.90. And the haori of the complete cosplays, from Tanjiro to Yoriichi, from €39.90 to €99.90. Here is how to choose, wear and care for yours.
Contents
In Demon Slayer, all demon slayers wear the same black uniform, with the character “destroy” on the back. What sets them apart is the haori, the open jacket they put on over it. Tanjiro’s green and black checkerboard, Zenitsu’s yellow triangles, Tomioka’s two fabrics, Rengoku’s flames, Shinobu’s butterfly wings: a glance is enough to know who is who. Wearing a haori therefore means wearing a character’s strongest sign.
This guide helps you choose among the haori in the section: the light haori to wear every day, the summer chiffon capes, the haori of the complete cosplays, size, how to wear it and care. To understand what each pattern tells, our article on the patterns of the Demon Slayer haori explains them one by one, and all our buying advice is on the shop’s guides and advice page.
What is a haori?
The haori is a traditional Japanese jacket, reaching the hips or mid-thigh, worn open over a kimono or a uniform. It has neither buttons nor a fastening: two small cords, when there are any, hold it on the chest, but most of the time it hangs freely. Its sleeves are wide and drooping, and its straight cut leaves the body free to move.
In the series, the Demon Slayer Corps provides everyone with the same uniform, but not the haori. Each one chooses it, receives it as a gift or inherits it. Rengoku wears his father’s, a former Flame Hashira. Shinobu wears her sister Kanae’s, killed by a demon. Tomioka wears two fabrics sewn together, one from his sister, the other from his friend Sabito. The haori almost always tells the story of the person who wears it.
In the Taisho era, at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the series takes place, the haori is still part of everyday dress. Men and women put it on over the kimono to go out, the way you slip on a light jacket today, and families keep a black haori decorated with their crest for ceremonies. The demon slayers are therefore not wearing a strange garment for their time: they add to the uniform a piece everyone then wore in the street.
That is what makes it the strongest piece of a cosplay, and also the easiest to wear every day: a haori alone, over a t-shirt and jeans, is enough to evoke a character without dressing up. Our article on the demon slayers’ uniform presents the outfit worn underneath, and the one on the Japanese clothing of Demon Slayer places it among the kimono, the hakama and the other pieces.
Which haori to choose?
The choice depends first on the use. For an everyday nod or a summer convention, the light haori at €22.90 is enough: it is worn alone, over everyday clothes. For the beach or a summer evening, the sheer chiffon capes go over a swimsuit or a vest top. For a complete cosplay, the haori is part of an outfit with uniform, belt, gaiters and sometimes a wig.
Then comes the character. The light haori takes up four characters, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Tomioka. The chiffon capes take up six, adding Shinobu and Rengoku. The complete cosplays cover almost all the Hashira and several other characters. The table sums up the offer.
| Family | Characters | Sizes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light haori | Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Tomioka in two versions | XS to 3XL | 22,90 € |
| Chiffon haori capes | six characters, including Shinobu and Rengoku | XS to XXXL | €49.90 and €59.90 |
| Complete cosplay haori | Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Nezuko, the Hashira, Yoriichi, Sabito | from 110 cm to XXXL depending on the model | €39.90 to €99.90 |
The light haori is in our Demon Slayer jacket and haori section, the cosplays in our Demon Slayer cosplay section.
Use first
The light haori for every day, the chiffon cape for summer, the cosplay haori for the complete outfit.
The light haori in five patterns
The light haori is the simplest piece in the section, and the cheapest, at €22.90. Its fabric is thin and hangs straight, without clinging to the body. Its sleeves are wide and cut at three-quarter length, which leaves the forearms free and makes it pleasant in summer. Its cut is that of a real haori: it stops at mid-thigh, stays open at the front, and fastens with neither a button nor a belt. The seams are simple and flat.
Five patterns are offered. Tanjiro’s green and black checkerboard. The pink hemp leaf of Nezuko’s kimono. Zenitsu’s white triangles on a yellow and orange background. And Tomioka’s haori, cut into two fabrics, in two versions, the burgundy one faithful to the series and a purple variant. It comes in seven sizes, from XS to 3XL, a comfortable range for an open cut.
Each of these designs has a meaning in Japan. Tanjiro’s checkerboard, ichimatsu, can extend endlessly and is seen as a wish for prosperity. Nezuko’s hemp leaf was sewn onto babies’ clothes so that they would grow straight and fast, like hemp. Zenitsu’s triangles, called scales, were meant to ward off misfortune. These three patterns existed long before the series, and they can still be found on Japanese fabrics today.
This haori is worn over a t-shirt, a shirt or a vest top, with nothing to tie. It makes a light summer jacket for a day in town, a trip to the cinema to see a film of the series or a convention in the middle of July. It is also the best low-priced gift for a fan: it actually gets worn, instead of staying in the wardrobe like a costume.
For a Tanjiro or Nezuko fan, our Tanjiro Kamado Demon Slayer collection and our Nezuko Kamado Demon Slayer collection gather the other items matching these patterns, from the throw to the slippers.

View the product · €29.90The chiffon haori capes
The two haori capes are cut from light, sheer chiffon. They are not swimsuits but open garments, with no button or fastening, which you slip on over a swimsuit or a vest top and let float. They take up the cut of the original haori, open at the front, wide sleeves, mid-thigh length, and protect the shoulders from the sun between two swims.
Each cape takes up a character’s fabric, without a face. Shinobu and her butterfly wings in a pink and mint gradient veined with black, Rengoku and his flames rising from red to yellow, Zenitsu and his triangles, Nezuko, Tomioka and Tanjiro. The sheerness of the chiffon serves these patterns: a gradient of flames or a veined veil regain a lightness that an opaque fabric would take away.
The first cape, at €49.90, comes in seven sizes from XS to XXXL. The second, at €59.90, with more drooping sleeves, in six sizes from XS to XXL. As the cut is open, the size mainly affects the length and the width of the sleeves, which leaves plenty of margin. They are washed by hand, in cold water, and dry in a few minutes. Our guide to Demon Slayer swimwear and beach towels completes the summer outfit.

For a complete cosplay, the haori is part of an outfit. Tanjiro’s is sold in five packages, from €39.90 to €79.90: the wig alone, the wig and the fox mask, the uniform alone, the haori and the uniform, or the complete set. Sizes range from S to XXL. It is the most requested outfit in the section, and the one that lets you put together a cosplay piece by piece according to your budget.
For a party, the wig and the fox mask are enough to make Tanjiro recognisable. For a convention, the haori and the uniform give the character’s complete silhouette. For a cosplay contest or a photo shoot, the complete set adds the belt, the gaiters and the wig, and all that is left is to choose the sword.
The Zenitsu cosplay, at €69.90, brings together the yellow and orange triangle haori, black uniform, belt, gaiters and blond wig, in ten sizes from 110 cm to XL, which lets you dress a child as well as an adult. The adult Nezuko cosplay, from €45.90 to €89.90, combines her pink hemp leaf kimono and a dark haori, with or without a wig, from 110 cm to XXL. Inosuke, for his part, does not wear a haori: he fights bare-chested.
These cosplays make complete outfits for a convention, a costume party or Halloween. Our guides to the Tanjiro cosplay, the Zenitsu cosplay and the Nezuko cosplay detail each outfit, and our demon slayer cosplay collection gathers them.

Tanjiro checkered cosplay

View the product · from €69.90The Hashira’s haori
The Hashira have the most spectacular haori in the series, and the section offers almost all of them as complete cosplays. Tomioka’s two-tone haori, burgundy on one side and with diamonds on the other, over a black uniform, with belt, gaiters and wig, costs €99.90, from 110 cm to XXL. Rengoku’s flame haori, white turning yellow before ending in red flames, is sold from €39.90 to €89.90, from 110 cm to XXL: the wig alone, the costume alone, or both.
Shinobu’s butterfly-wing haori, from white to pink by way of turquoise, costs €79.90, with her butterfly hair clip. Sanemi’s white haori, with the character “kill” on the back, is sold from €39.90 to €89.90, from S to XXXL. Obanai’s black and white striped haori costs €79.90, from 110 cm to XXL. Gyomei’s olive green jacket, covered with prayer characters, costs €89.90, from S to XXXL.
These haori are printed over the whole piece, and their pattern stays readable from a distance, even in motion. For a group of friends, bringing together several Hashira makes a striking photo at a convention. Our page on the Demon Slayer Hashira presents the nine, and our Hashira cosplay collection gathers their outfits. Our guide to Hashira cosplays compares them one by one.

Rengoku flame cosplay
White haori with red flames over a uniform, with or without wig, from 110 cm to XXL.
View the product · from €44.90Other characters’ haori
Other characters have their haori in cosplay. Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the first swordsman of Sun Breathing, wears a red haori over a pale orange kimono, from €69.90 to €99.90, with or without a wig, from S to XXL. Sabito, Urokodaki’s pupil, wears an ivory haori over a kimono with geometric patterns and a black hakama, from €44.90 to €69.90. The swordsmith Haganezuka also has his cosplay, with his hyottoko mask.
Yoriichi’s haori has a special value for fans: it is that of the strongest character in the whole series, whose story is only revealed late in the manga. Sabito’s recalls the friend whose fabric Tomioka sewed into his own haori. Our article on Kokushibo and Yoriichi, the Tsugikuni twins tells the story of the first, and the one on Sabito and Makomo that of the second.
Choosing your size and wearing the haori
A haori is worn loose, not fitted. Unlike a jacket, it does not need to close on the chest, and a slightly loose size hangs better than a snug one. For the light haori, measure your chest and the desired length, from the shoulder to mid-thigh, and compare with the chart on the product page. Measure and rely on the sizes on the product page: it is the surest way to choose well.
For a complete cosplay, the size depends mainly on the uniform worn underneath, which must close without pulling on the buttons. The cosplays that come in children’s sizes, from 110 to 160 cm depending on the model, let you dress a whole family in the colours of its characters. Our page on Demon Slayer for children gives guidelines by age.
Every day, the light haori is worn over a white or black t-shirt and jeans, with trainers: a simple outfit that evokes the series without dressing up. At a convention, wear it over a black t-shirt and dark trousers to recall the uniform. For winter, slip a sweatshirt under the haori, or choose a hooded wearable blanket, which takes up the pattern in a warm version. Our guide to Demon Slayer throws presents the wearable blankets.
Completing the outfit
For a complete cosplay, the haori goes with a sword. Each character has their blade: black for Tanjiro, yellow with lightning for Zenitsu, blue for Tomioka, red with flames for Rengoku. The section offers 104 cm replicas, LED katanas and LED vapour katanas that smoke in the half-light. Our guide to choosing your Demon Slayer katana compares them.
A few accessories refine the silhouette: Tanjiro’s hanafuda earrings, the fox mask pushed up on the head, Shinobu’s butterfly hair clip, Zenitsu’s triangle earrings. For the feet, tabi socks and flat sandals recall the period of the series. Our guide to Demon Slayer masks presents the fox masks, and our page on all the Demon Slayer characters helps you choose yours.
Giving a haori
The haori is an easy gift to get right, provided you know the person’s favourite character. For a Tanjiro fan, the green and black checkerboard. For a Nezuko fan, the pink with hemp leaves. For someone amused by Zenitsu’s fears, the yellow triangles. Tomioka’s haori appeals to those who like silent characters, and its purple variant to those who want a more discreet haori.
When it comes to size, the haori is forgiving: its open cut and wide sleeves adapt to very different body shapes, and a size up still looks elegant. For a child, rather choose a cosplay in a child’s size, from 110 to 160 cm depending on the model. For a teenager who does not want to dress up, the light haori can be worn to school over a t-shirt, like a summer jacket. Our guide to Demon Slayer back to school presents the rest of the kit.
Care, budget and delivery
The light haori is machine washed at a low temperature, inside out, and dries on a hanger in the shade: direct sunlight fades bright colours, Zenitsu’s yellow and Nezuko’s pink first. The chiffon capes are washed by hand, in cold water, without wringing. The cosplay haori are washed by hand or in the machine at a low temperature, inside out, and ironed at a low temperature, inside out, so as not to flatten the print.
The smallest budget is the light haori, at €22.90. The chiffon capes cost €49.90 and €59.90. The complete cosplays range from €39.90 for some partial packages to €99.90 for the Tomioka cosplay. Our Giyu Tomioka Demon Slayer collection, our Shinobu Kocho Demon Slayer collection and our Kyojuro Rengoku Demon Slayer collection gather their haori and the rest of their items. Items are delivered in 5 to 12 days depending on where you live.
